Hello, just found this sight because i've determined that my next project will be a GN. I know absolutely nothing about these cars, so I'll be sitting on the sidelines reading through threads to learn as much as I can prior to purchasing. I am at the end of my latest project (rotisserie restoration of a 1978 Y-88 trans am) which took 2 years...all be it, one of the years I was in Iraq (Army helicopter pilot). Other car is a 73 challenger R/T clone...Anyway, I'll be piping in asking the questions asked all the time i'm sure, but want to make an educated decision prior to buying one of these...and if you guys are anything like the pontiac forum i'm also on...you will be a wealth of information for me. thanks

Welcome aboard Tony. There are several people near you in Waco and Austin area. I'm just north of Waco in Hillsboro. As far as finding one make friends on here and I'm sure one of the members will be happy to help you check out a car if you find one.

Welcome aboard! Another great site for info is www.gntype.org but it dosen't have the member perticipitation the you will find here. Also get used to using the "search" function it can save you a lot of time. Remember there is ALMOST nothing on these cars that has not been gone over dozens of times. Good luck with your "education" and feel free to post when you find a car so maybe someone may be able help you keep from making a bad purchase. I'm sending you a PM. Jon Hanson

Thanks, that is what i am counting on....glad to know there are some guys who know way more than I do that are close(i'm just south of waco). I'm not kidding when I say I know nothing about these cars....except they were painted black...and I always wanted one...lol If I wasn't dishing out the money this week to paint the Trans am, I'd be buying "jpwahler"'s car in the for sale section...beautiful car.

I'm sure there are many questions to come....as far as parts availablity etc,etc... After my second tour of Iraq, told the wife I wanted a challenger, so I got it....ofter the third...a trans am....now after my fourth...oh yes...i will find a GN...

first dumb question....what are the differences between years...preferences...the good the bad between the years?

thanks for any help...Tony

83 and ealier are draw through carb/tubo and are considered the least desireable. But 82 was the official first year for the GN, and it wasn't much of a performance vehicle.

84-85 are nonintercooled fuel injected and aren't neer as easy to modify but it can be done.

86-87 are the most desireable from a performance stand point. A lot more parts are out there but you have to know what you're getting into. Do lots of reading and ask as many questions as you can.

First step of learning complete....now I know to narrow the selection down to 86-87 models...Thanks charlie..
