Mid 12's on drag radials with a good running engine can be done looking bone stock heres my list, this assumes all the sensors are in proper working order and in good shape, you said you wanted to rebuild the stock turbo

1.You will need alky kit since you are using pump gas
2.fuel pump 307/340 hotwired
3.Good flowing exhaust
4.turbotweak chip
5.kn air filter cone style
6.Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
7.Scanmaster
9.adjustable wastegate
8.Lots and lots of tuning this is the most important this should be good for mid 12's depending on weight and tune maybe low.

There are other mods you can do to retain the stock look,u can port the elbow on the turbo, port the turbo, and intercooler neck yourself all these things will help.

Making Good Headway

Guys:

Making good progress on the GN freshening. A couple of quick questions though.

Coolant bypass hose from front cover to intake - is this dealer only? I've checked all my regular hose suppliers (Delco, Gates, Goodyear) and none show it.

Oil cooler adapter o-ring. Mine's got some damage, need to change it. Again, a dealer part? Can I just replace with an o-ring of identical size from the local industrial supply shop?

Cam button - Can the original be reused? If not, suppliers?

Thanks in advance!

Checked out Mike M's (Pronto) car the other night. Incredibly clean and quick machine - got me seriously motivated to clean up the La Brea tar pit under my hood and get the GN project car on the road fast!

Haven't had to buy a bypass hose yet. A neoprene or viton o-ring of the right size will be fine on the adapter. Napa, Poston's Buick, and others have needle bearing cam buttons that won't eat your timing cover. Find one of those. ;)

Coolant bypass S-Hose is a dealer item. Part#25525245 $30.88.

Oil O-ring came with the Felpro gasket set from Auto Zone Part #TCS45930 About $8.50

I got my billet cam button from John's performance. I hear there are cheaper places like Napa to get it...

Cam Sensor from AutoZone as well $44.00 with tax. Works great! Good luck.

Moving Along!

OK guys,

The rebuilt turbo is ready to install. Searching through the posts here, sense some dissent on gaskets. Should I use a gasket from turbo to manifold? If not, why? What's the preferred method of sealing?

Also, I do have new studs and lock nuts for the turbo, but was wondering if nuts and bolts can also be used to ease installation. Do the studs provide better clamping force?

last question - during the turbo removal, I removed a small silver sheetmetal shield of some type. It's about 4" long. In a rare moment of carelessness I forgot to note where it came from. Any ideas?

In the words of Homer Simpson, DOOOOOHHHH

We're getting close to a turbo Buick drive - I'm pumped!!!

Heat shield bolts on the back of the turbo mounting bracket, in front of valve cover...

On the turbo because they are both machined surfaces, I just used the hi-temp copper gasket maker w/o problem.

I preferred the studs and nuts, but don't forget to use an anti-seize on the both of them.
