Take one of the valve cover off and see what castings you have on it now. If they're a set of 305 heads you've got more compression than stock so you should be good. Go get a book on the SBC and do some reading on it. There's a huge selection of heads out there for all the different combos.

the engine in the car now is a chevy 3.8 v6 with the distributor in the back and the a/c compressor on the drivers side...it runs but smokes when the engine is cold and has a very strong odor

Get a set of SBC 354344 castings. A friend of mine has a set of World Product vortex heads that would bolt on but you'll need a different intake. I'll see what he wants if you're interested.
