Hi , Im considering trading a car i have for 1986 buick regal t type turbo, can anyone tell me the retail value of these cars in good condition and are these car very collectible and i dont know to much on buick vin decoding,if possible can someone decode this vin 1G4GK4772GP443041 so i know what im trading for, any info to a buick newbie would be a great help and much appreciated

We need more info on the car. Pics/ mods/ somebody here may even know the car.

These cars range widely from 7-20K depending on condition and mileage. 86 and 87 have the desireable engines and are the only models with significant value. Just ensure the VIN has engine code J. See gnttype.org for more details on VIN and option sheet codes.

i dont have any pics but i went to see it, frame look good, interior is in int condition, the body , doors, rocker all look solid, it not perfect and has some spots that will need some repair here is some info the seller gave me regarding this car

I have a 1986 Buick T-Type. 3.8 V6 with a fresh turbo. Burgandy exterior/interior. Colum shift. Bench seats. Interior is mint except headlinr sagged over the winter. Some small work will be needed to make the body perfect. NO HOLES OR ROT ON THE FRAME. Every point these cars could go soft was checked and all are in great shape. Replaced the coil and ignition module. March underdrive pullys. weld draglites. Stock rims included. flowmaster exhaust. Intercooler was serviced and pressure checked in the fall. Car ran great last year. Not running this year as I have not yet installed the new turbo. I will make sure it's doon soon to hear it run

If you are close to a board member they might go to look at it with you......

The VIN code for the Desirable engines is 7

DO NOT JUST TAKE ANYONE'S WORD ON RUST!! LOOK for yourself. Even if the car is a southern or west coast car it doesn't matter. I know a lot of "northern" cars that went south. Small work can grow $$$$$ fast !!

.There is a LOT of other things to look for to.. Should have someone that knows the cars look at it with/for you. If ya don't and ya post here "crying" you won't get much sympathy :p Remember these cars are 20+ year old PERFORMANCE cars.

i went down with a friend who owns a classic car restoration shop, he said its solid from what he saw but it need to be on a hoist to get a better look underneath, as far as the body you never know whats hidden under the paint and bondo

Absolutely put it up on a hoist if you can and take your time. You'd be amazed what people can hide with a rattle can and some armor all. I porked myself by not inspecting my GN myself and I ended up with a cobbled together p.o.s..

Respectable people.

One of the board members said it best, where are you at? I myself am in Oklahoma. There will be someone that will be willing to help you decide the value. And I know you might worry that by doing that you may lose a good deal if someone with common interest views a car that you have found, but trust me they are just like me and many others wanting nothing more; just want to keep this rare bread alive and support many/all that are upstanding and honest people with a passion for the these very unique cars. They will not steal your deal but rather help into the sport. No car is worth cheating someone out of a car they have found and those willing to help you will become very close partners, because you are going to need them. Scott

Three things you really need to do
Take someone that knows these cars, then
Take someone that knows these cars and finally
Take someone that knows these cars

Trust me, wish I had known about this board and members before I bought mine.
I too knew absolutely nothing about these cars and am learning the hard HARD way.

There are many problems with an old performance car and it adds up really fast.
Had mine almost three years now, everytime I turn around it need this or that and sitting in a garage takes its tole.

Find someone nearby who will go with you and give an honest assesment of the car without emotion.
Some of these guys will be able to tell you in about 10 minutes what the car will need.
I would be very surprised if it didnt need somethings, but at least you will know upfront what you are getting into.

I didnt.

Good Luck !

Steve
