I am a newby to Turbo Regals and have a few questions.

1. What is the stock horsepower for an 87 GN? How much horsepower can the stock turbo support? Who makes aftermarket turbos?

2. What are the easiest and most effective mods?

3. WHat to expect out of a stock car in 1/4 mile ET and MPH?

4. WHat will it take to run 11's on drag radials with a moderate converter?

5. Where can I find some written literature on mods?

I am about to buy an 87 GN and will be looking for some advice to get this thing in the 11's. I have had numerous mustangs in the low 11's and one in the tens. I feel like I am starting all over again! Please help!!!!

www.gnttype.org

Thats the bible for our cars. Go there and browse around...

Just to answer some of your questions quickly depending on mileage your looking at 240-260 stock HP and mid 14's quarter.

Check under performance receipes on gnttype.org and it will list all mods for whatever time you would like to run....

Before you go modifying it do researching and also search our archives here lots of info there. You want to get it running right now before you go and do things. These cars are unique and different then any other car so ask question's and have fun with it.

Oh and WELCOME!!!!!!

11 is simple to get to it is 10's and faster when you have to start to look inside the motor.
a good start to get low 11's

1. 9" 3000-3500 stall conv(i have the art carr 3500)
2. te60-te63(i have the 63)
3. ATR double pump, and change the main pump to a walbro 340
4. port and polish the stock heads and port match the intake(i got a extruded intake with no egr)
5. slicks (28X10.5)
6. front mount (I have a ATR)
7. Brake booster or trans brake (I have Ron's Custom Auto brake booster)
8. 3" Terry Housten Down pipe
9. Well that right there will get you to 10.7-10.9 leaving at 10-14psi and 22-24 psi down the track on 116 race gas with no knock.

They are the mods I have and a good tunner Paul @ Ron's and I still have the stock block with 34k on it and have had no problems ever. (knock on wood)
:)

Stock rated HP for '86 was 235, and 245 for '87, net at the crank. This was just a marketing number so that they would be way more than the corvette. Actual HP was somewhere between 270 and 290 (car and Driver magzine estimate their 1986 road test car had "atleast 290 hp"

2. What are the easiest and most effective mods?

After you've upgraded the fuel pump, anything that improves airflow, both exhaust and intake will give you more power. Reduce exhaust backpressure to a minimum with a free flowing exhaust and reduce intake restrictions with a cone airfilter.

3. WHat to expect out of a stock car in 1/4 mile ET and MPH?

On a stone stock car with stock exhaust, cat, airbox and fuel pump, expect mid 14's @ 95. With a K&N, a freeflowing exhaust, chip, race gas, traction, and free/cheap mods, low 12's @ 110+ are completely possible with a stock turbo, intercooler, injector, transmission, rearend, motor... nearly stock everything car.

4. WHat will it take to run 11's on drag radials with a moderate converter?

My car has run a best of 11.53@118 with a TA49 turbo, a 2.5" neck welded to the stock intercooler, 36# injectors, a terryhouston 3" downpipe, thru full exhaust on 275/60 BFG drag radials with the stock transmission and torque converter, just using the mods and tweaks outlined on the recipe page of GNTType.org. These cars are really easy to make relatively quick, without buying a lot of mods.

You can build a combo for 10's right away or you can go at it a piece at a time, staying conservative. I chose the later approach, because I like the idea of keeping a car as stock as possible for as long as possible.... until the stock parts become a bottle neck and need to go.
