Where to buy Nittos? Jegs and Summit dont advertise that they have them.
I think they are the best choice for my TTA, maybe not.
I want to be able to drive the car and enjoy it as much as possible. I plan on putting some decent tires on the front and drag radials on the back. So what should I use. I do still plan on running some in the corners. Is there any regular tires that will stick well enough to ge tmy car into the 12's? I am planning on running around 20psi of boost for now and putting in the things I need to do that on a stock turbo and stock intercooler. So with that I would like to hit high to mid 12's. So which tire, and will I still be able to drive in the corners?
Pros and cons to all tires would be great!

Tires

Hmmmmmmm, where can you buy NITTOS ? HMMMMM, don't know..... :D HINT -> LOOK BELOW

Kyle, you don't mention if you have the stock wheels or not. I imagine you do so it really depends on if you're going to use another set of wheels for the back of your car or not. If not then the biggest size Nitto Drag Radial you can put on a 16" GTA wheel is the 245/50-16.

Now, if you want an all around tire you can go with the Nitto NT450, in size 245/50-16($99.00 each), which has a treadwear rating of 300aa, as compared to the DR which has a TW of 100. They are still very sticky and I think you'd find them suitable. If you want a radial with more bite and a lower TW rating then you can go with something like a KUMHO (low cost - $98.00 each) that has a TW of 280aa or a Dunlop Sport 8000 (medium cost - $136.00 each) that has a treadwear of 200aa. The factor to keep in mind is that buying these plain street radials for the same money will a) limit traction and b)not be as sticky as the Drag Radials. HOWEVER - they WILL corner better than a Drag Radial.

So, you have some options to weigh out. If you have any other questions, feel free to call or e-mail me. Take care...

Go with the Nitto Drag Radials Bro. You will not regret it. There is a dramatic difference between them and "regular" radials. They hook on the street even with 24psi thrown at them. I have made 2 passes at the track, launching at 4psi and then 5 psi. No spin at all. I cant wait to go back and launch harder. I realistically expect high 1.7 60'.

Nevertheless, there is no more tire frying at the top of 1st gear and no more 75' posi marks when catching second.

Get the Nitto DRs, you'll love them. I have them on mine as everyday tires. 10K miles and still going :) I had Firestone Firehawk SZ50 previously. I could cut 1.9 short times with a best of 1.88. I put the Nitto's on and went 1.6-1.7 with a best of 1.65 a couple of times. That was with stock everything.

The first time at the track might be disappointing. But after that, they stick like glue.

Good luck.

Ok, yes I am on stock rims. I am not planning on visiting the track much. The local track is an 1/8th mile and the nearest 1/4mile is a 2 hour drive and they only have test and tune on Wed. night. I am sure it will see some. Probably like 2 or 3 trips during the season, but mostly I just want somethign that is going to stick if I take it there. Also incase I get into in the street I want to make sure I dont burn the **** out of my tires. Though on the other hand most of the time I will be driving on country highways and interstates and I want something that is worthy to cruise at 80mph and hang tight corners at say 40mph or so and feel stable and not sloppy.
Will nittos fit the bill?
Thanks Guys, and If a buy them I will buy them off a fellow board member since I know they sell them. It helps keep people providing us with parts for our cars!

the nitto drag is a great tire... but in my opinionm if you are not going to take it to the track that much then dont get. the nitto drags will only last you a year of daily driving... if anything get an extra 2 rims and toss it on them.... they are awesome tires, i have them on my stang and hope to get a set on the GN hopefully this week.

Actually that depends on how much you drive. I have 10K miles on these tires so far. On my 96 WS6, they made it to 15K miles before they wouldn't pass inspection anymore. Still had some life in them for the track, but would've been a little scary in the rain.

As for burning up the corners, I know several F-Body guys that actually auto-x on Nitto DRs. So they can handle the twisties also. At the F-Body event in Memphis, I could take turn 1 after the drag strip at fairly insane speeds :)

I have an Escort for a Daily driver the TTA is for Fun! Sounds liek NIttos is the one for me.

Tell me about this tread wear rating that you mentioned please. I've never heard of it before. Is this rating marked on all tires or is it in your sales literature? Thanks for any info. Drew

I was thinking about going with a set of Nittos next time I get tires. I have a daily driver with BFG Radial T/A's right now.

For anyone that has done this same switch, I have a few questions.
What, besides hooking up better, can I expect with this change? Is driving in the rain that much worse? I think the T/A's are fine when they are wet. I just don't hit it very hard.

One other thing. How well with the 245's fit on stock rims? My guess is just fine.

Thanks
Tim

The 275/50/15s are about $150 a piece. If you put 10,000 miles a year on your car, expect to replace them yearly. My car was scary on regular street radials. It always wanted to swap ends when I got on it. The nittos just spin a little at the top of first and at the top of second. I've had mine for over 2 years and they have a lot of life left, but I only drive about 1000-2000 miles a year.

Those wear ratings are on all tires that I've seen, also on most tire websites.

the bfgs dont last as long from what i hear... ive driven plenty of times in the rain with nittos.. no problems

From what I have seen, the BFGs hook a little better, but are very scary in the rain, and only last about 5000 miles. Then nittos don't hook quite as well, are fine in the rain and last at least 10,000 miles.

VS.

I'll second what RON and 6pack have said. However, I have yet to see a good scientific comparison as to which tires hook better. I know the NMCA guys are both running good competative times with each respective tire. So, does it really depend on the driver, the car, the suspension...I think you'd be happy with either but the NITTO HAS BEEN PROVEN TO LAST LONGER.

Yes, salvageV6 is correct, most knowledgable wheel and tire places will give you the Tread Wear rating up front - AS I DO, when you're comparing these tires for purchase. The numbers ARE on the side of the tires and should be listed wherever they are sold, either in catalog or internet listing. HTH...feel free to call!!! :D
