We here in NJ are limited to who we have that knows these cars as far as heads to oil pan, and proper set-up. I have heard alot of good things and bad things about Rons custom auto in Kenilworth. Jack Merkil is his engine builder please give me some feedback on what you guys hear about Rons and Engine builder.

Thanks,

Jack Merkel is building a Buick 3.8 Turbo engine in the current GM Hi Tech Performance Magazines. i just read a post and a bunch of people say he knows his stuff. the articles have many tips that he gives to readers to increase oil flow and what not. they also say he seems to be a friendly guy. from what i have read i would give him a call, IMO:)

Yes i have spoke to Jack very nice guy, however he is big big bucks and only does the block. As far as chips, intercooler, turbo and set-up you get shoved to the front of the building to deal with Ron from Rons custom auto who also seems helpful. I was just wondering has anyone had their engine done from oil pan to turbo and what feedback do you have?

Thanks,

Magazine fluff don't make a good engine rebuilder. Keep posting here and other Buick boards on what shops the members were satisfied with. Also a lot has to do with what is discussed before the work and payment has started. Get it all in writing and the prices on the usually bad parts and machine work like pistons, recondition rods, linebore, etc. Also ask what brand parts are being used. There is a $300 price difference between JE and TRW pistons. This will all add to the price.

What about Dynotech Performance in Manville, NJ??? I've heard that they have a LOT of experience with these motors, but I'm wondering if this is true or not cause I have a friend that is considering having them build his motor. TIA:)

i would take it up to R.P.E. engines and have bobby do it ... he is located in east hartford ct,....he is the guy doing mine....he builds great engines

Dynotech in Manville i heard they were real big in the late 80's. However i called them and it seems they do work out of a house garage and do not do in-house building and machine work. They are more of a bolt on shop 11's-12's. If you want to push the envelope shops in NJ are limited. Has anyone heard of quater mile performance near ATCO racway. The legend Jim D was running a shop down there. There is a guy that was blasting these cars in the 8"s in the late 80's. I hear he to is out of business.

Quarter mile performance in Atco is gone. I heard Jim is still doing something with cars in Berlin but dont have any details. Sorry.

dynotech bad for motors, and rons good for motors well jack is and ron is good for a people person and helpful for bolting stuff on the motor. just had my 67 stang biult by jack and installed by ron, paul, and the others. good peoples

I have heard great stuff about him. He builds some bad ass cars. Does not advertise it either very to himself. I like that.

yeah very to himself as far as advertising, which is cool :)

the price of the motor was not bad it was the extras i added, trans, intake, carb, headers, fans, gauges, brakes, just about everything else. plus he only wanted half up front and the rest when he was done. I dont know if it was because i spend alot of cash there or because that is the way he does business either way it was nice for me. cool guys and they do in-house porting flowing and all machine work.

thanks by the way about the car

Yep,I think Dynotech is great for only bolt-ons but as far as motors, I wouldn't recommend them(from my experiences).Ron's auto is the way to go.That's where I'm getting the new motor for my car done.Although he's pricier It's well worth it.I've dealt with Ron back in '98 before he teamed up with Merkel, and I got good outcomes as far as a motor and bolt-ons were concerned. And anytime I had problems,he or Paul would take care of me with no hesitation. They are good people. This is JMHO.I only speak of these two because they're the ones I've ever dealt with when it came to my GN.There's more TB specialists in the area like Rich's Auto in Freehold;Dan Smith in Camden;and Turbo People in NY just to name a few I've heard about.HTH.....

1. Yes, he's out of Business - at least at that location.

2. Yes the Buick was fast... especially at that time. I think his main sponsor was BGC.

3. A good buddy of mine got screwed royally by this guy... what a crook! He had his car (ATI blown 383cid Z28) for at least a year and never finished it. The car was finally retrieved from Jim D via help from the local law enforcement. My buddy then had it sent to Second Street Speed (Perkasie, PA) where it was finished with no problems.

P.S. His head wrench at the time said that he (Jim) was just a driver. He (the mechanic) did all the work on the car.
