Hopefuly someone can help me out with some info here. I have an '87 GN with a 200r4 that won't shift into second under any circumstances. If I push it hard through first, I just run into the rev limiter, so I have to lift and get it into third, then I'm ok. I can't baby it into second or anything. Its like secoond gear isn't there at all. As far as how much power I'm making, the dyno sheet said 496 rwhp, though it just will not shift into second. If I baby it through 1st, it just won't shift. I have to get into it a bit, then lift, and it will go into 3rd. I intend to bring her in to the shop and have it checked out, but it's a bit of a drive, and I haven't had time to do it yet.

Thanks for any input.

Blown servo seal or stuck valve in vb.

Or broken band anchor or the band is just toast. If the band is burned you would be able to smell it in the fluid.

after a little more testing, it isn't exactly that I can't get into second. I can, both on an upshift and a downshift, but it acts like i'm in neutral until it decides that it should shift to 1st or 3rd, based upon throttle position and RPM, just like it would if second was there.

Thanks for the info so far. I was just looking under the car today and noticed something. I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but between the oil pan and the transmission pan, there is what looks to be another short pan of some kind with what looks to be a missing drain plug. I don't know what it is or if this is related to my problem. Any input? I'm fairly ignorant on this stuff.

Thanks.

That's just the converter cover. The hole is a drain hole just in case you get water or oil in the cover. It's suppose to be open.

You may have ..

Punched a hole through the apply pin side of the band . Also, it could be a broken band anchor. But, it is either the band, anchor, or apply pin damage. One of the three.

Man, not my month.....This, oil leak, exhaust leak, and a u-joint and transfer case on my jeep. Thanks for the input, guys. Looks like it's time for another trip up to Anderson's.

I had the exact same problem in my 87 GN... No 2nd gear at all.
It went from 1st to 3rd.

Turns out it was a torn-open lug on the band.

I didn't bother fixing it... I sold the trans and went to a TH400...
