car hasn't been started in a few weeks because the batt. went dead.....replaced that and the starter doesn't engage at all or even try to engage ??

cleaned the terminals at the starter +....Nasty looking and thought that was it - but still nothing

Lights are bright and dont even dim at all when key is turned in ignition switch ??

I even resorted to smacking the starter a few times

never had a problem starting before....although the car is not currently on the road - I'd start it ever week or so

What next ??

could the factory "security" sys. be doing something whacky ??

Are you getting voltage at the starter for the small wire when you turn the key?

Did you take the wires off the starter?? Did you put them back on the right terminals?? Especially the smaller one. I'm assuming you have checked for 12V at the starter from the big cable.

As for your alarm question, sorry.. not that familiar with the factory alarm. I know my aftermarket alarm gets pissed when unplugged and won't let you start the car until you've reset everything.

You have to have someone in the car turning the key while you smack the starter.

And make sure batt. cable is not corroded. HTH

The only wires I took off were the large (+) coming from the batt. and the other wires attached to this post on the starter - on the other ring behind ....

If the big cable wasn't providing 12v, would the lights and everything else still be hot (which they are) ??

Looking at the starter solenoid, there appeared to only be connections to this post - are there others ??

Where is the small wire you first mentioned and how do I check voltage to it ??

Thanks much guys....I hate electrical problems. This car hasn't been used regularly for a few years and Im looking to end that soon !!

At this point, I think I'd pull the starter to make sure it works. Maybe the solenoid took a crap.

LOL....i have the exact same scenario....car sat for 2 months, put in new optima battery, now all of the sudden the next morning its totally dead....lights, gauges etc all light up super bright....weird.
