non bfr tranny in my 86 gn, please help

i would first like to say that i am pretty much clueless when it comes to transmissions.my 86 gn does not have the original brf tranny in it, i cant even tell what the tranny is out of because the id tag has been painted over.but what is the difference on the brf trannys?could i do anything to change it to a bfr?please help.

Just painted over? There should be numbers and letters stamped into tag. Ck real close..

sorry im taking so long bruce, i have working so much i really havent had to much time to mess with the car.i can tell you this much, i got some of the paint off and the orginal color is light blue, probably wont tell you anything.i will get the numbers on saturday, im taking the gn to work so i can put my new exhaust on, using a lift makes it a lot easier.
