Hello everybody. New member here with a bit of a problem. I ordered a Stage 2 2004R to put behind the small block in my '69 Camaro. It is from a very reputable buider in the world of 2004Rs but it has been a comedy of errors that is really nobody's fault. I was a little concerned when my order showed a Stage 1 but the builder assured me it was a Stage 2 and the invoice does show that.

The thing that has me worried is the invoice shows this as a non-lock up transmission. I need a lock up transmission. I look at the end of the input shaft and see that it is not splined on the last 3/4 inch of the shaft which would be correct for a lock up style transmission. When I talked to the builder about what would be a good converter for my car's setup he said that the D5 from a Grand National would be a good choice so he must have known I would be running a lock up converter.

What is another external way to tell if this is set up for lock up? I just took delivery last night after a delay of a week that was the freight company's fault, so I have to wait until Monday to talk to the builder. Like most rodders, that wait is killing me and I want to get started putting this bad boy in. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. :)

Is the o-ring and check valve still in the end of the input shaft? Pull the pan and see if the lockup solenoid is still in it and the shuttle valve under the lockup solenoid is still there. If they are it's still a lockup.

Well, I will wait until I talk to the builder. It's on the pallet all wrapped up nice and tight. If he says he made a mistake, send it back, it will be easier to leave it. If he says he did make it a lock up, I will definitely check for those things. Gives me time to drop the old Turbo 400. BTW, if anybody is interested, I will have a Turbo 400 for sale soon.

I am curious. Are the parts that would be needed to convert tranny to lock up if it is a non-lock up fairly easy to install? I get the feeling the thing needs to be taken apart to get the o-ring and check valve into the end of the shaft.

If the pilot on the end of the input has been cut off the input will need to be swapped. The lockup valvetrain needs to be physically checked if the builder is not sure. There is no other way to know for sure. Pulling the pan and using small snap ring pliers after removing the lockup solenoid if it has it. Don't assume that if the solenoid is not there it's been converted or the other way around.

Will this be on the end of the shaft that is inside the trans or the end that is sticking out of the trans?

Thank you for those diagrams. I was looking all over for something like this.
I checked this morning and it certainly doesn't have those parts. I didn't even know you could make a 2004R a non-lock up. Never even crossed my mind. Gosh, learning sure is fun! :D
