I have an 87 MC SS 383, 700r4 with 3.73's.

I am not happy with 1st, 2nd shift RPM drop.

Would numerically lowering the rear to 3.42's or 3.23 help with the engine falling on its face.

I see that Ckperformance offers a more evenly spaced gearset for the 700r4, but the price is up there.

I have already spent much money in the tranny department.
I am debating on a 2004r or a TH350 w gear vendors.
Occasionally a gear vendors unit can be found on craigslist or ebay for a $1000.

Anybody know of a good tranny shop in Fort Wayne Indiana?

Numerically lowering the rear to 3.42's or 3.23 would be worse.

I like a bullet proof 4l80E,a little pricey but just an option.

2004R I like better than a 700R4 ,better gear spacing,plus you can use a lock-up converter & get better mileage than a 350 & gear vendors unit.

I could never figure out why the Monte SS guys made such a big deal about the 700r4 swap when they already had a 2004r. It almost seemed like they thought they were getting something better because 700 is greater than 200 or something like that. I would have a nice 2004r built and put that in your car.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I am a computer programmer by profession. I will try to do some bartering.
Maybe someone needs a custom inventory system?

Chad,

FYI, there is a great article in the new Car Craft educating people of the differences between the 2004r and the 700r4. It is an article and interview through Art Carr and I believe it is the March issue. I just got it in the mail on Monday. But, one of the main pluses to the 2004r talked about was the smaller RPM drop from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. HTH
