I had a problem a while back where my 87 GN would backfire when starting it up. It would blow off the cap I had on the throttle body vacuum block for a future vacum brakes upgrade. I found a piece of easter egg basket grass hanging on my crank position sensor, and that was that.

The other nite after installing a ported exhaust elbow so I could do the whole two piece 3" downpipe & temp catalytic conv for emissions, I lengthened the wastegate actuator arm 1.5 turns since I need to replace my fuel pump & add the hotwire kit, & I took'er out for a spin to see if there were any positive results. I kicked it once, it knocked some & felt lacking in power. Then when I let off I heard some weird noises, only to find it had blown the cap of the vacuum block again. Never seen it do that unless it was backfiring upon startup. Got another cap & replaced it, but then while driving I could hear a kind of cross firing or missing coming from the tailpipes under normal acceleration, & I can feel it surging a little. Also, it's idling like crap. Passed emissions tho?

So far I've changed the plugs & tried another coil. The coil seemed to help, but it's still lacking power & idling badly. I checked the ground at the back top of the block, looked great & tight. Reset the ECM, checked for a cracked FPR hose. Today I checked the compression while a storm rolled thru. It was me against the almighty smiter

Pass side psi front to back:
140, 130, 125
Driver's side psi front to back:
145, 130, 150

Doesn't seem to be a head gasket, but it's my first compression test ever. Also, maybe it's my imagination, but I'd swear the factory boost gauge looks different under boost. Instead of stepping up light by light, each one very pronounced, they seem to flicker as the go up, almost like the boost is not as definite as it was before.

Hear's what my scanmaster is say'n:
AF @ idle = 3 & @ 3Krpm = 13 (seems low to me?)
L8 @ idle = 28
Bat @ idle = 13.8
Int @ idle = 128 & @ 3Krpm = same
BL @ idle = 128 steady with no change @ 3Krpm
MPH @ idle = 0 (duh)
CLT @ idle = 162 (the rain cooled everything down, except me)
ATS @ idle = 88 steady with no change @ 3Krpm
RPM @ idle = 850
TPS @ idle = 42 (steady with no dead spots up to 440)
IAC @ idle = 20 & @ 3Krpm = 30
cc @ idle = 01, 25, 45, 71, 91 etc
MAL = none

Does AF reading indicate a problem with the 85mm MAF sensor or the Tranaslator Plus? Maybe I should watch it under boost, cause I thought that went up to like 300 or something. Any ideas? I've read every related post I could find, & tried all the tricks I've found. This thing is starting to kill me here, & I'm low on funds to boot.

Thanx guys!

PS: I can provide a list of mods if needed.

Eyup, AF does seem a little low @ idle. Need to check AF @ higher rpm under load/ boost to determine normalcy.

Thnx for responding guys, I run the Extender chip for 50 pounders.

Also, I'll check AF under slight boost today.

The extender chip cuts AF numbers in half... 13=26

I'm getting an AF Scanmaster reading of 54 under 5 pounds of boost. Does this sound correct to anyone?

Thanks VadersV6 & everyone else for trying to help. Anyone have any ideas where I should check next? I think I'm stumped......

If it poppes thro the intake on startup, either cam sensor not set right or the coil pack and module.

I have seen cars with slipped chains act up, what chain do you have?
BW

Stock chain 24K miles. No more popping, just loss of power, surging while cruising along at 50mph, and an intermitant bad idle, especially when in gear.

Thnx for helping!

Under normal acceleration it's missing, I can hear it.

Tomorrow I'll pull the cam sensor cap off & blow it out.

Any other ideas guys?

Thnx for the help!

mine has the same problem please let me know when you find the problem

Still missing/skipping under normal driving

So far I've swapped the coil, ignition module, plugs, and checked or redid the plug wires (will be getting new ones according to the "spring cleaning" on gnttype.org). The new MSD wires are 40-50 ohms per foot, I'll most likely get a set of those. The new plugs are cr43ts gapped to .035.

Still have the skipping during normal driving. I've been cam sensor shy, but I'll check it soon. Meanwhile I did my 3" 2 piece SS ceramic coated downpipe & dump. Too bad I can't enjoy them yet :(

Anybody got any shortcuts to installing the ledfoote cam sensor cap with the lighted indicator? Maybe I should just install mine, I'm just a bit chicken. Not too great with timing issues.

Thnx,
James

Yes, under boost or normal driving, if someone were next to me with a keen ear, they'd notice that it was missing. Grounds looked good to me, but where can I find more info on the crank sensor adjustment/check you mentioned?

Thnx alot!

After the car is running unplug the cam sensor and see if the miss goes away. I had a similar problem, the miss went away when the sensor was unplugged. I had a TR shop reset the sensor (the brass colored ring/cap was actually loose) and the car has never idled better and my tip-in stumble of many years is gone.

Thank you Sir, I did not have that one. Great inter cooler facts & figures. I just put my Cottons style stretched stock location on mine. The figures look pretty good for that one!

I replaced my crank sensor today while I was instaling my inter cooler. According to the tech info on that page, I almost did it right <g>. It seems fine, I think the OEM one was rubbing, but not defective. I may have solved one issue which was a slight rattling/knocking noise.

I went ahead & thru on my new Polycog belt too.

I think I have two choices left for solving the "missing" problem. The cam sensor cap, or the ECU. I have both, the cap is a LedFoote indicator cap, and the ECU is used untested.

XLR8, I actualy have one of those ring unpgrade kits on a spare sensor assembly, but I'm not happy with it cause it seems to scrub the inside of the shaft bushing. I'll pull the OEM cap, check for dirt, make sure the ring is tight, and see if I can figure out the new cap install. Then it's on to my hot wire kit.

Thnx Guys!

Damn--like life, it's always the little things that grind us down. The BIG things are much easier to handle/ solve! I admire your stick-to-itiveness approach. Good luck with your ongoing saga.

Thnx TurboMonte, actually you asked a question that's been on my mind. The problem with missing does not actually seem to be there under heavy boost. It seems to smooth out some under heavy boost.

With my factory boost gauge fluttering like it is now all of the sudden, I'm thinking I might have a burnt valve. From what I've read, I need to get a mechanics steathascope (sp?), shove it in the throttle body, turn it over a few times, & listen for a hissing.

Is that why you asked the question?

Thnx again,
James
