Just wondering if it is OK to remove the oil cooler adapter & cooler lines? My car is never raced, only driven 50-150 miles a week, normal driving with some stop & go... If it is OK, how do you remove it? Any opinions on this would be of great help? THANKS

Yes, it can be removed, but why do you want to? Unless you had a brg failure then why not leave it in. But to remove just remove oil filter, unscrew the nut hold the adapter on and remove the hoses with it from the rad. Screw a new filter onto the pump cover (same thread size as nut) and away you go.

The GM tech engineers didn't design and build it for something to do. If it leaks, replace the O-rings...there are 3 of them. 2 little ones that go on the hose ends and one large one that goes between the adapter and TC cover. Kirban's and many other vendors sell larger OD O-rings that help prevent a leak from this union. Do what you like, but I wouldn't remove it. To change the large O-ring you need to undo the piece that the filter threads onto...I believe it's 1 1/4" and re-torque to spec.

I'm not sure if I am going to do this but I need to do some maintenance SOON... The problem is, my radiator is shot, cooler lines are shot and the adapter is leaking, 178K does not help... I have way too many other things besides cars to take care of but I dont want the car to sit or break down cruising I enjoy it way too much!!! Thought I could get by with a Re-Core and trash the other stuff till I can dump some more money into the car and replace everything... I know, I'm cutting corners but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do... Any more opinions from others who have done this??? THANKS, Jason

Jason I am not far from you and I have a change which could work for you.

On the TTA they used an oil to water cooler mounted in place of the adapter on the GN/ TTypes. I found a cooler made by DANA which fits and had adapter bolts made. No external oil cooler lines. No oil cooler needed in the radiator.

Tony DeQuick gave me a bit of help with this kit when I first thought of it and he says these are excellent coolers.

It places the oil temperature control under the thermostat and allows for a constant flow of coolant that varies directly with RPM. Both of these are an improvement over the stock setup ours came with. And this is why I believe they made the change on the TTA. After all, those engineers didn't do it just for something to do. Right?

I am pretty tied up with the IACP (big time cop) show in the convention center this weekend, but let me know if you are interested.

David,

It's great to here from a local TR owner. Not too many on this board...

I would be very interested in checking out the cooler that you have adapted to your car. I will e-mail you soon and see if we cant get together one of these weekends...

Thanks, JASON :)

sounds interesting!!

David, can you give me more information on exactly what you did? I had to abandon my stock oil cooler in rad because of brg failure and now I am looking at installing a separate cooler. Your idea sounds very interesting. Please email me off board if you like or just post it here. Thanks

Heya David...I'm interested in this setup as well...If you are going to do a mass emailing to a few people about this, I'd be interested in being on that list...Thanks...

Hey David - me too, always interested in things like this. I talked to Tony about a donut cooler like that a long time ago, guess you hadn't done this at that time. Please post more info!

Well I have a bit of time again after our big show in Minneapolis and the work that followed.

The oil cooler I found looks very much like the cooler used in the TTA. Then I went to a parts store and just went through hoses until I could find ones to fit the curves needed on the front of the motor. You would remove the "S" hose for the intake to water pump by-pass and route the coolant through the cooler instead. There are no modifications to original parts. And now no oil lines to the radiator.

I was already having adapter bolts made for the Biggie kits and I just had a small run done with longer bolts to fit the coolers. So the larger PF24 sized filters mount right up.
