To make a long story short i was pushing my gn kinda hard today and smoke filled the inside threw the dash and console i thought my wires were fried but it turned out that oil had either went threw my breather by pass kit on to my headers or went around the dang thing because the top of the cap is hitting a heat shield on the back of the turbo stopping it from being pushed all the way flush with the valve cover. im pretty sure it came out threw the breather its self because its pretty much soaked with oil. ive got 3 questions about this i hope you all can help me with

What would cause the oil to shoot out of the breather? I lost about 1 qt threw that little breather on the front right valve cover.

There's a little thing on the right valve cover with a red electrical plug in and 2 vacuum hoses coming in to it, im missing the top hose there's nothing on there, where does that go?

How can I flush all the oil out of the breather without buying one of them k&n kits? Would gas work?

That is the boost soleniod and it used to have a tiny filter on the one port. No big deal if it's missing. But all that oil being pushed out the breather sounds like boost is getting past the PCV valve. It could also be blowby getting past the rings.

1. You chucked a head gasket? Suggest a compression check may be in order.
2. The wastegate solenoid has the wastegate hose assembly connected to one port and a small, foam filter connected to the other. Sounds like you're missing the filter - NBD.
3. I think these breathers are still available from GM (assuming it's an OEM breather) for just a few bucks. Or try Kirban.

:)

1./ The crankcase has to breath. If the PCV is hooped it'll vent out that breather.

Buy a new GM PCV and Grommet , don't buy one w/o the other...your oil will just pour out the grommet.

2./ DO NOT plug the extra nipple on that red thingy...called a wastegate solenoid

3./ Why not spend the $9 and buy the K&N cleaning kit??? You're gonna need it down the road too.

ive got postons breathers in each of the vavle covers, where would the pcv valve be on the gn? the car drives fine i dont think i blew a head gasket my dash would be lighting up if that was the case. do you all think that the cars safe to drive as long as i check the oil, im still getting a little trickle makeing it past that breather by pass

The "breather" is:

1.745 FILTER, Vent - P/N 557240

$14.33

The filter for the wastegate solenoid valve is:

2.408 FILTER, Sol Vlv - P/N 801528

$0.90

na man these are aftermarket postons breathers, like 17 bucks for the one i need but thats not my problem im wondering if the cars ok, in other words how bad did i screw it up lol

The PCV pushes into a grommet on the passenger side of the lower intake manifold, "between" the #4 and #6 fuel injectors. Follow the "fat" hose down.

Any bubbles in your radiator overflow tank?

Any antifreeze in your oil?

Any oil in your antifreeze?

If you did pop an HG and there's AF in the oil don't drive it or you'll be looking at a new crank and bearings - AF is hell on the bottom end...

ok theres no bubbles, when i took the radiator cap off there was no steam or any thing comeing threw the system. no oil in my antifrezze that i could tell but it was a rusty redish color so im over due for a flushing of the system. and i dont know if theres any anti freze in my oil as far as i can tell no but ill have to crack the oil plug tommaro and see if any comes out, bad part is im going to have to drive it for about 30 miles before i can check it so im taking a 50/50 chance but its something ill have to risk. im not burning any anti freze because im not blowing excessive amounts of condensation out of my pipes so my guss is the head gaskets are good.

how would you all go about stoping the oil leak? ive also noticed a few other problems sence this happined, the transmission while in drive makes a whining sound at around 40 and up but it shifts fine and the injectors are ticking alittle more then usual, any ideas?

Pull the dipstick out. Look at it. Does it look "milky"? Run your thumb and index finger down the dipstick. Does the oil feel clean and slippery - or "grippy" and dirty?

Just be careful dude - get your compression checked - don't lose a motor over things...

Good luck!!!

:)

This is probably stupid, but sometimes we overlook obvious things. Check and make sure the oil isn't coming from the oil return line on the bottom of the turbo. It is near that area and could have got on the breather. I've busted 2

ive done checked the oil about a half dozen times, the oil was fine and not gritty but i would still like to drain a bit out and have a closer look sence that gunk usually settles to the bottom.

ill do a compression test when i get time but the engine was went over by the past owner who ran his own garage and car lot so im pretty sure that the cars in tip top shape. i think im safe as long as i replace the pcv valve and keep oil in it. im not smoking so my rings and valve seals are not bad, if they are getting worn there not bad enough to worrie about. im not getting air in the radiator, no air is comeing out of the breathers, no waters in the oil, and ive done drove it for 50 miles like that so im hopen im safe, any way if not its a excuse to put in a stage 2 ;)

im more worried about the transmission then any thing, the doughnuts must have tore something up, but o well i was getting sloppy any way so it aint that big of a loss, actully i know a boy with a rebuilt oz and he needs a 3 speed and ive got a rebuilt 200 metric so i might just swap it with him

i dont think it is comeing from the oil return line because once i cleaned up the mess it never sprayed oil again and the little heat shield between the back of the turbo caught most of the oil and the turbo was not oily, if the return line blew looks like it would be the other way around

actully comeing to think about it i betcha something stoped up my oil return holes for a few seconds and the oil just built up and blew out the breather by pass

Take that small heat shield off that is behind the turbo so your breather will fit flush in the front of the valve cover. You dont need it anyway. Also make sure the grommet on the front of the valve cover is ok.You may want to silicone the breather in the grommet.

Since it is not smoking out the tailpipe it may not be a headgasket, but YOU NEED TO DO A COMPRESSION CHECK TO BE SURE.

Do as the others have suggested and put in a new PCV also, and let us know what happens

As long as your'e not having the problem now I dont think you have anything to worry about. The leaking oil out the breather anyway. I had that problem once too. I autocross my GN and I put one of those little K&N on the right side, anyway when I would make a run which was usually about 40 to 60 seconds under boost, oil would pour out of the breather. The reason why is that on a V-6 the lifters and top end get lubricated first than whats leftover goes to the mains and rods. Also I noticed the oil drains rather slowly out of the cylinder heads into the crankcase. When your are cruising at 2000 RPM's this isn't a problem but sustained high RPM's and to much oil accumulates under the valve cover and leaks out the breather. I would think if you blew a head gasket excess smoke would be blowing out the breathers. I eliminated this problem on my 86 by running the right side valve cover off a 84-85 hot air car because it doesn't have a breather hole on the front. I would think unless youv'e got some wild mods it shouldn't cause to much trouble running with one breather. I have the normal go fast stuff and I dont have a problem with excess crankcase pressure.
