I would suggest a MUCH tighter clearance than .002-.003" I set the end play to .0005"-.0015" That is half a thousanths to one and a half thousandths for the numerically challenged. As a machinist friend use to say......"half a tenth to one and a half tenths" (as in ten thousanths or .0005" is 50 millionths) I usually take a LONG time to set up an oil pump. The aluminum timing cover expands so drastically at operating temps that I try to get the pump to slightly drag when cold. It will reap rewards in hot idle oil pressure.
The reason I set them at .002-.003 is the gasket crush. Over time the cover gasket will crush and bind the oil pump when it is cold if you set it in the .0005-.001 range which loads the cam sensor and timing chain. On a H.V. cover it's not necessary to make it that tight.
