What is the best gasket to use? Do you guys use any kind of sealant or dry for installation? I am fighting a leak on these joints and all is flat and smooth. What do I do?

Dry! Proper torque sequence and correct torque spec with non-stripped threads works for me.
 
I have always used the ones that come with a new pump or front cover. Any should work fine.
 
They come in many different thickness to aid in the proper cleanance for the oil pump gears. I read where one person did spray the gasket with the copper gasket sealer and let a tack up and they said it worked great.
 
I was the one who used the copper spray and YES it worked excellent (light coating). I had previously installed it dry and still had seepage.
So...I tried it again and used copper spray w/new GM gasket and it is bone dry. Like INTERCOOLER SAYS Be careful not to over tighten and if you've never had one apart - there are two bolts inside the housing that can only be accessed AFTER the oil coller adapter is removed. Put in new O rings on the cooler line as well...size is 10x2.5.

It turns out that the pump cover must be warped right at the pump outlet where there is very little sealing surface. How do you resurface one of these, has anyone ever done that?
It is either that or buy a new one, except the pump is new that I bought last year and just know finding out the problem.
Can I just buy a pump housing without gears and whatever else?
Does GM just sell the housing, P/N? Thanks guys

Paul,

That's exactly what was wrong with my 1st front cover. I "resurfaced" it while it was still in the car :eek: and it worked. I removed the filter adapter, then got a piece of 3/8" thick aluminum scrap slightly larger than the size of the oil pump pad. I glued a piece of 280 grit wet/dry paper to the alum scrap "block" and sanded the pump pad while spraying the block with WD-40 to keep the paper clear. It shouldn't take much (my pump pad was only half machined - the rest was as-cast) as the 280 removes aluminum pretty quick. Make sure to clean up good, check gear clearances before assembly, repack the pump with vasoline and you should pull the cam sensor and re-prime the pump.

S10XGN, it sounds like you are talking about the timing cover surface? I think my problem is with the pump cover itself. At least that is the easier piece to work with.

He said he sanded down the cover to make it even as I understood the post.

It is common practice to sand the cover on a piece of plate glass (or thick metal as he did) to insure it is flat.
