I have a melling high volume oil pump and a new GM front cover that I am working on for a new engine (3.8 turbo). What do I need to do to the oil pump passages in the front cover?

Anyone have any pictures of a "ported" front cover?

Thanks.

IMO, with a new GM front cover and a new motor, you shouldn't need the hi-vol pump...Contrary to popular belief, on a fresh motor with tight clearances, the stock pump is actually more than enough to feed the motor...Just make sure that the passages aren't blocked with casting flash...Some GM covers have been known to have one of the passages blocked...

As for the passages in the front cover, clean up the casting flash and deburr the corners, and if possible, take a dremel tool to all the right angle passages and radius the corners in the passages to smooth the flow path of the oil...

It would be kind of hard to take pics of a "ported" front cover because of where you need to do the porting, you really can't see just be looking at it, you can't get a direct pic of it...

I'm currently in the process of changing my timing chain and I noticed that one of the passages was blocked off by the gasket. I'm not sure if it was a water or oil passage. I believe it was the oil. However, since I didn't have an oil pressure gauge I'm not sure what was my pressure. Either way, couldn't have been good.

If you are talking about the middle hole in the timing cover then it is ok. It gas against a blank surface on the block. Top hole is clean oil back into block and bottom hole is oil up from pan.
