When priming the oil system with the motor still in the car do you have to remove anything in order to get a drill on the priming tool ? I purchased a chevy small block priming tool from Jegs and it seems I will have to remove the fuel pressure gauge, alternator, ect in order to get a drill on the tool. If the tool was about 6" longer there wouldn't be an issue, does anyone make a longer tool for our cars ?

I don't know what the chevy tool is like but I made one out of an old cam sensor and I know others have made them out of junk distributors. I don't have to take anything apart, other than removing the cam sensor to use mine. I don't have a permanently mounted FP gauge so I cant say whether or not that has to be removed.

I may have used a drill extension but I don't recall since it's been a while since I've had to use it.

Yes I had to remove the gauge and any wires in that area. Get as small a drill you can and put it at the end of the tool. Turn drill sideways and it should lay on alternator. You may have to remove the alternator if the drill is too big.

This sounds case by case depending on the length of the tool, size of the drill and custom accessories.

Without looking at it, give some thought to welding a 1/4" universal joint on the tool. Use the shank from a blade type wood drill to put on the other end of the extension. Make the lengths right and you can clear whatever is there. Might be a good idea to slide some fuel hose over the spinny parts so hey won't mar anything they touch. Or a nice UHMW sleeve to be even better and possible act as a hold point.

You can by a 1/4" drill extension at just about any hardware store[/quote]

I welded a shallow 3/8 drive socket to the end of it to use a long extention but it doesnt spin true and wobbles around quite a bit, a little less with a universal joint between the extention and tool. I a little worried that it might hurt the oil pump or something.

I used an old gm hei distributor shaft with the gears ground off the end. Works great with everything on. You'll feel the drill load up and thats the pump priming.
