Pulled my turbo off today (installing the JS Manufacturing kit) and found that there was a lil oil inside the intake and turbo.

Question is - how much oil is 'acceptable' ? Should there be ANY oil at all or do all turbo's leak some amount of oil?

My turbo hasn't been abused due to my lack of a scan tool. I only have it at 8-10 PSI of boost and it sees that once or twice a week maybe. Its only a couple years old at most...TA33 from Limit Engineering.

Seals gone ?

It is normal to get some oil in the tb/intake due to pvc leakby under boost on these cars. Does the throttle body have some oil too, how about the PCV hose? If they do, it is probably just the normal amount. It doesn't sound like the seals necessarily, but even with a turbo that age you can't rule out the seals because it's new. With that said, I have my doubts that it is bad seals at this point. Does the car smoke or have much blow by as evidenced by alot of oil in the breather?

Blow-by

Hey thanks for the response. No smoke when running but sometimes a brief black puff (prob rich) on start up.

I bet you are right on the money. The TB is discoloured inside and when you wipe it with your finger it comes off like its oil - caked on sorta dried out residue.

I checked the front of the compressor side where the TB mounts up and I can feel oil there as well. Makes sense that its getting sucked in. I am in the process of converting to the JS Manufacturing IC / intake kit and there is no provision in the new intake for a PCV hole.

Would you eliminate it ? I still have a breather on the valve cover....

That's a tough call, i'm not sure what to tell you. There have been alot of discussions on this about problems like yours in the general tech section, but every time I have read them I walk away without much direction. I will say that i have heard more negative things about eliminating pcv. I'd like to note that I responded to your first post thinking that you said oil in the breather (instead of intake), which is caused by boost pressurizing the crankcase. There have been so many threads about both the oil in the breather issue and the oil in the intake issue that I made the mistake of mixing up the two. I still do not change my stance that it is normal pcv operation, the only thing that changes with what I said is that it is under vacuum that the oil vapors get drawn into the intake, not under boost (this is where i assumed you meant oil in the breathers and not intake). Still, this is a normal part of pcv operation, as vapors are simply drawn in under vacuum. Alot of people just run a PCV catch can and empty it regularly, that is always an option. I would try searching or posting in the general section to find out more about pcv elimination.

since its a oil thread thought id ask and maybe u guys can give me some good advice on wat oil to use on my car thats just under 10,000 miles on it?

I run 10w30 when the temp outside is 60 degrees or higher. In the winter I run 5w30. Pick a premium brand and stay with it and change the oil frequently. Brad

so it would be good to use 10w30 wit under 10,000 miles in the motor? and wat oil do u guys use ? mobil or castrol
