Ok its smoking need ideas

A While back I was told at a drive through they smelled smoke. I was not sure for a while but today it was really bad . I just started it in the shop and all was well for the first
5 minutes or so then I look over and there plumes of blue smoke from the exhaust. Then it goes away after 5-10 minutes, but if I rev the engine I can make it smoke each time I rev the engine . It not as much now but still too much. I pulled the up pipe and
The pipe is not black but feels sort of sticky. The TB is black but i think it always was .I let it run with the up pipe off and there was no smoke at idle . I couldn't rev it like that though and after putting it back I did not see smoke at idle just when I revved it... What does this sound like ? Turbo seals ? Rings? PCV ? Valve seals ?
The valve seals were replaced last year with new felpro parts fwiw. I think intake side only,
Thinking I may have to Cancel mt hot rod power tour plans now... Anyone want a nice GN runs good just smokes a little.?

Blue smoke means piston rings, valve guides or valve seals, usually piston rings though... sorry

Or turbo seal. Pull the elbow and see if there is play.

see if the inside of the PCV hose is wet with oil or pull the vacuum block and see if there's a telltale sign

The most common cause of the "sudden smoke syndrome" is the turbo.

After checking the obvious with negative results, I install a good turbo.

I do realize most owners do not have a couple turbos on the shelf, maybe you could borrow one for testing?

I had a bad PVC valve in mine the other day mine got to smoking , found oil in the vac lines like earlbrown said .

Thanks I'll check it out,
I do have the stock turbo. it is in good shape or was when removed last year. I could put it back on,
I cranked it up to roll the windows and let it run a minute or so total. Zero smoke even revved it up a couple times and nothing. Does this mean anything ?

it means it's intermittent which make me think you might luck out and it be a cheap fix with the PCV.

autozone PCVs wont' work. you need an actual GM unit, but I would inspect and test before just shotgunning parts and hoping for the best.

i'm about to change the turbo on a fresh motor that has like 60 miles on it and my turbo is questionable and smokes abit revving it up like its valve guide smoke (no start up smoke what so ever)...cruising its fine, boosting and letting off its good...now ..coming to stop light every other time after letting off is another scene...nice rumbles of smoke trailing up on both sides like a Dodge

The easiest way to eliminate the PCV circuit is to take the hose loose from the vacuum block and put a cap over it.

Ok the weirdness continues.
Drove it last night ran good no smoke at home at the drive through no oil smell to speak of either. Drove it this morning no smoke driving I had my wife follow me and the only smoke she reported was when I floored it and that may have just been rich Carbon smell ... Drive it around no smoke or smell then I roll up to a stop light and I see a cloud of blue smoke roll by my passenger side window!! It was mine ! Drove home left it idling no smoke ...?????

Does the car still have the stock breather on the passenger side valve cover? Where it hooks up to the turbo?

Maybe it is the PVC. Would that act intermittent ?
I'd figure rings, valve seals, or turbo would just get worse...
Heck I guess worst case I drive it and provide mosquitoe fogger coverage on the power tour.

take of the intake pipe off and and give the shaft a wiggle and see what she says.

Just got back from power tour.
Drive it about 700 miles and it ran great other than stalling when hot at idle.
Get back in town park let wife run in store and what do I see but smoke !
It's oil because the car is hot after a 160 mile drive and it's 90 degrees or so out.

Now I'm setting in the car at the tanning salon and there is no smoke after about 5 minutes idling with the AC on... What the heck is going on !
PCV !?!!

Might be an issue with the turbo oil drain? If it's too small or got something in it that is blocking the flow? This causes oil to get past the seal and into the turbine at conditions where there is low pressure in the turbine, such as idle and decel.

Talked to a friend who was behind me he said under boost it was clear but smoked on deceleration . I had the heads freshened by local shop and new felpro valve seals the guides were not touched as far as I know. About 65k miles on the engine. Runs good it's just pissing me off,
Turbo seals? PVC? Valve seals or guides?

To let anyone going through something similar. It was the turbo . I swapped the stock one back on and hooked the Pcv back up and the smoke stopped.
