Does anybody know a good website for decoding vin numbers for old chevy bodies and engines? Thanks alot...

I tried Mortec. Has a little info but doesn't really break down the vin. Anyone?

Dog,

Shoot me numbers and i'll dig in my books

Also Eric aka turbofish has a database at his fingertips

Try these numbers.
O5D
66-14637-LOR-1002
842-A
W-2M
That was from the cowl tag on my father's 66 Impala. We are trying to find out what engie/trans it came with as well as the original color.

This is a serial number for our 58 GMC Napco truck, see if you can break it down: 152PS1667B

This is the number of the engine (not original) from the truck:T062EDA. That is from the passanger's side front of the engine.
Thanks a bunch.

1958-67 models, the tag is riveted to the firewall near the windshield. and that seems to be the body tag

O5D<---time built
66<--year built]-14637<---body type]-LOR<--Plant-1002<-# unit
842-A
W-2M

The Vin plate attached to the left front body hinge pillar directly below the upper door hinge. would have the 2nd and third digits which should be 68 which is Impala SS V8 (1966-67)

58 GMC........152PS1667B

15 is 1500, 2= 127" wheelbase, P= Pontiac assem, S=?, 1667=Serial
B = 6001 to 10,000?

Hope im getting this correct..am kinda tired

See if you can pull the Engine# from the front pad on the Impala

Mike

05D I guess is the 5th of December?
Body type meaning?
Is there a paint code in there?
Does this number tell which engine came with the car?
What is concidered the "front pad"?
Thanks

Get the Vin numbers from the plate on the hinge pillar and also get the numbers from the motor, pad on front pass just under head.

if those are worn down then there are other ways to try and cross ref dates etc

Ok, I gotcha now. I'll check for the vin number. The car has no engine/trany so we are trying to figure out what it came with. I guess the vin will tell that. The motor that we will probably use is the one from the napco truck. It is thought to be a 283 but that is all we think we know. The number on the pad on the engine is T062EDA
Thanks

O5D=4th week of May
66-14637-LOR-1002 66=1966 16437=Impala Sport Coupe(SuperSport??) LOR=LosAngeles or LoraineOH 1002=????
842-A 842= Blue interior. Bench seat. A=material type(???)
W-2M=Paint W=Chateau Slate lower half 2=Black Roof M=Aztek Bronze(???)

I couldn't narrow down the engine code. Double check that letter E and make sure it aint the number 8 or something else. The T is Tonawanda NY and I have the DA code listed for a 65-67 283.

Edit. All I can tell you is that the Impala has a V-8. You'd have to have the Protect-o-Plate to see what it had for engine size and options. I dont know how those guys who claim to have a 409HP 409 Impala do it with out one to back up their claims.

Awesome. Thanks alot. What exactly is the "Protect-O-Plate". I've heard of it but not sure what it is.

Back in the good old days when you bought a car new there was a metal credit card sized plate with the owners manual that had pretty much everything a dealer needed to know about the car. A primative version of our SPID labels more or less. Now that I think about it there was two plates to a vehicle. One with car information and the other with the selling dealer info. You know those old credit card invoice stampers with the handle you pulled down to imprint a piece of carbon paper onto 2 pieces of paper? What you did when or if you had to bring the car in for warranty(90 days! Take that Toyota!) the dealer would stamp the paper work with those plates so they could be payed for the work. I bet if you look at old Vettes and muscle cars on eBay a few of them have the original Protect-O-Plates.

So does the car match up with the info I posted? I'm wondering about the silver and bronze paint. That sounds weird to me. I wasn't to sure if the 2M was just a special roof color.

Well the car is all blue now but it has evidense of being sort of a torquois color under that. I'm not sure if that is what they called the "Chateau slate" though. As for a black top or even a bronze top, there isn't any evidense of that. It is a fast back car as apposed to a post car so I guess it is considered a sport coupe. The interior is blue with a bench seat and column shift. You can tell that the engine emblem on the fenders were a small "V" as apposed to the "V and flags" emblem so it was probably a 283 and not the 327 or 396. The code for the engine we have sounds good for us and date approperate. I'll check for other numbers to narrow it down more to see just what it came from. Car is going to need floor pans and some chrome but is a pretty solid platform to start with.
Thanks again

I got the vin# from the door pillar. What will this tell you:
16437 6 U 105078.
Thanks
