When I first got this car I saw another at an event somewhere that had a completely stock looking fuel pressure regulator, but when they pulled the vac hose off, it had a hollow set screw in the threads for adjusting it. This was not the kind with an aftermarket top put on it. How was this done? Something I wanted to tinker with and probably waste a 237 regulator I got for free. I am also aware of the socket trick to smash the top down to increase PSI.

I have one here made by Bosch. They look stock & the screw is under the hose as you described. I also have one of the old Top Hats that you cut the stock regulator. I don't know how you could make one without tearing it up?
I'll sell you the Bosch unit & the Top Hat version for $65 mailed to you if you like?
The Bosch is Guaranteed Good & the Top Hat use at your own risk! ;)
PM me if your interested?
I may have given the Top Hat to my friend last fall?? Gotta look in the shop?

The stock apearing ones where problematic. A friend tore one apart and they had used a little cup on the inside and beefed it up with a DIME. Yep, 10 cents. The little cup was very thin and it sat in the top of the spring, and the dime allowed the set screw to press down on the spring without poking a hole thrugh the thin cup. A little set screw was drilled down the allen socket and had a small hole drilled into the side below the cap. Somehow they would remove the cap by bending it up, then add 15 cents of parts (most of that cost was the actual dime.) Then re-crimp the cap back on. Hardest part will be opening the factory crimp up around the cap. Good luck.

Wasn't there talk about them not being able to put out enough pressure under high boost?

Bowling Green Customs made these I believe. I saw one for sale on the forum not all too long ago. I have one on my GN, no problems with it so far.

Same problem I had. I had a top hat style here, gave it away some time ago. I got an accufab on the car, figured I'd never use it. Then I bought another powertrain and I'm trying to be a tight ass. lol
