The L88's were iron blocks with aluminum heads; targeted at road racers. 103 octane was specified by a decal on the parking brake, if not used it warned of engine damage. 68-69 the L88's were visually distuingished by a special hood; otherwise there was no way of telling. There was 3 427's available in the late 60's until 1970 when the 454 came into play.

the ZL1 Vette had the L-88. BUT, the L-88 in the ZL1 was all aluminum........in my CHP it says only 2 were sold in '69.

There were only two built. I believe one of them is in the Corvette museum today.

L88s are ok but a 1968 ZL-1 Vette would be better. Was second fastest( AC/Cobra was first ) all -time OLD muscle cars. Put a good ET street on it and your close to the 11s stock. Guy has a stock 69 ZL-1 Camaro with low 12s on good tires.

Actually it was in 69. Motor Trend ran the ZL1 and got it to run 10.8@130mph. The A/C Cobra tested by Motor Trend ran 13.8@106mph.

Estimated power output of the ZL1 (Vette version) was 550hp.

L-88 Iron head, iron block, 430 hp, really 560 w/headers, 12. 5 cr
L-89 Aluminum head, iron block, 435 hp, 3x2 cards, 11:1 cr
ZL-1 Aluminum head, aluminum block, same as L-88, 12.5 cr

An engineer who worked on the L-88's was asked if the engineering dept. lied about the hp rating of the engine, and he replied "No, the engine made 430 hp on the dyno at 5300 rpm. At 6500 rpm, it made substantially more horsepower. You don't get far in GM by lieing to the management." That engine was made to run 7600 rpm. Nice piece of hardware from the Bowtie Boys.

L71 is the 427 with 435hp you listed above.

L89 is the RPO code for aluminum heads on the 427 engines.

The L88 had the aluminum heads included in the package.
