hey guys. I know a couple of popupls here and there is normal, but lately at my home computer I am getting PEPPERED by the damn things. I have a cable modem (always on connection) and when I woke up thismorning, there were 26 (yes 26, I counted them) pop up windows on my desktop!!!!! I cant barely even surf in peace anymore, that is how many damn pop ups I get. Ive even trie getting one of those pop up blocker, and they don't work for ****! The only block "some" of the little bastards! But I did here it kill another 7 popups thismorning before I got out of bed (yes that would have been in addition to the 26 that I counted) What the hell can I do here??!!

Also, it is like my computer is hijacked! If I type, lets say, GRAND NATIONAL into the address box of internet explorer, it used to just search for things related to grand nationals. Now, it goes directly to some "shopnav" crap, (like it's using a completely different search engine) wich will include alot more than normal results on thigs that may be for sale for a grand national. I play a couple of online games, and I can't even play them anymore cause everytime I get a pop up, it boots me out of the game!! its killing me.

Pop Ups

I'm no expert but if I was you, I would download and install these two programs.

First is ZoneAlarm.
http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10039884.html?tag=free

Then SpyBot Search & Destroy
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1

That should fix you up. If not then I would back up my data, reformat the harddrive and start over and install these two programs before your computer has a chance to become infected with spyware, trojan horses and popups. Of course Antivirus software should be running 24/7 to.

Good Luck,
Mike

I am by no means a computer expert, but it sounds to me like you've downloaded and installed some sort of program that invites pop-ups and things like that. Things like Gator and such.

Are you saying with your internet online and no Explorer or Netscape running, your computer downloaded 26 pop up ads on its own?? God knows what else it's bringing down while you're asleep. I'd take a good look at what's all loaded on your computer. Yes, we all get pop ups, but it almost sounds like you're asking for them without knowing it.

I hope someone else can chime in and give further info/ help.

I tried all the software listed ....

This woirked the best

For Windows XP, should be similar for other versions of Windows:

Click START,
Click CONTROL PANEL,
Click PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINANCE,
Click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS,
Click SERVICES,
Scroll down to a file named MESSENGER and double click to open,
Under the GENERAL TAB, find START UP TYPE,
Click on the drop down menu and select DISABLE,
Click on APPLY, and then OK.

You are done.
Screw those spammers - they use the messanger service to access your machine, by disabeling the service they cannot get thru.

This was from a thread Steve Helped out on.....

If you mean the popup ads in the window with the ok button that is text and looks like it is built in the computer, AsphaltAnihil8r's advice is spot on. That messenger service is no good to the average user, and I have no idea why it is on by default in winxp.

If you mean actual popup popups, then I say follow clone311v6's advice and run spybot, because it sure sounds like you have a problem with spyware.

Popup stoppers that work well:
popup stopper companian (works in ie only)
the proxomitron (free, and is pretty serious, lets you stop lots of annoying things on the net like background music, scrolling status bars, auto-resizing web pages, popups, animated gifs, etc.. I use this one)

Install the following Free Programs

Sounds like you got hit by Gator or some other such invasive, PITA ad software. These should alleviate 95% of your problems

Popup Stopper Free Edition:

Lavasoft Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

And Cookie wall for good measure:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/cookie.htm

I use them myself. First time I ran Ad-Aware, it got about 400 hits on my system, and I thought it was pretty clean.

Send me a PM if you have any problems.

I've used a couple of pop-up blockers, but the one I've settled on for work and home is
www.endpopups.com
It doesn't block links you click on, like some did, and you pretty much forget it's there.

I use ad-aware 6.0 for scanning the cmputer every now and then for the ad software, and it seems to work very well. I got it HERE look in utilities and search for it.

Both of these are freeware.
