My pistons should be here this coming week . I must thank earl for the time he has spent helping me figure out the best route to go with them and making them happen at a very reasonable price . Today I thought I would give modding my front cover a shot to work with a gear drive setup . I made the cuts where I have seen other ppl make them and what do you know it appears to clear . Now to weld it back up

Just a update I finished modding the timing cover . And I was just playing around with that Indy intake and stage heads . It looks like I would need to make about 1" 1/2 spacers to compensate for the gap . I actually think that the spacers would help me with some of the problems with tuning a individual throttle body setup because I could drill and tap them for a vacuum fitting a then have a good map signal to run speed density .

Well started to mock everything up again . Pistons should be here in the next couple days . So in between mocking the motor up I decided to make use of a junk block I have and made a table

Okay haven't updated in alil while . So thus us where I'm at . The rotating assembly is at QMP in chattsworth . I will also be taking them the block to get it diamond honed . Before the block goes I'm setting up the solid roller I got from Bo . Specs in pic . I ended up shaving down a spot in the timing cover and placing a steel piece for the nose of the cam to ride on . After the cover was on and off about 5-6 times I got the Cam end play right at .003 . The cam drive gear was spaced out .125 to get the proper mess with the cam sensor . I also made my own oil pan baffle to attempt to keep the oil splash to minimum, I received my boost leash with bump box built in . I still have to finish welding the headers after installing a flex coupler and individual cylinder egt probes. I traded my 6765 back to comp . Going with a 3bolt .85 CT43 7168 triple ball bearing . So I'm thinking by the end of next month this motor will be in and tuned

Okay just a update . I had to hone out the bores to get .006 piston to wall clearance. So I have completed that and now after honing it my ring end gaps are off so I'm waiting on 4 top rings and 4 second . I have already set my ring gaps to .024 and .026 . I installed my crank and it is at .0038ish end play . I have my main studs torqued to 100 ft/lbs on the studs and the bolts are at 65ft/lbs. I also have set the #1 piston assembly in to check that I'm not still at .125 @ TDC which thank god I'm not . I'm sitting right at .003 in the hole @ TDC . I have done my compression calculations with the actual numbers and I'm right at 10.5:1 . I will be runing E85 so what do you guys think of runing a compression ratio that high ?

I'm planning on running 11 to 1 myself. I think the compression ratio is fine.

What head gasket thickness were you planning on running? That should drop your static down a hair. I dont see 10.5:1 as an issue. I plan on doing a similar build, 11:1 sounds interesting. I think once timing can be effectively controlled it will be nice performer.

Almost every head gasket I have blown, and there have been a lot, goes back to timing control and timing accuracy. That is one major advantage newer motors have on a 30 year old Buick.

I'm running felpro 1026 .039 thick 4.090 bore .

Okay well the day has come. I set my ring gap at .024 on the top ring and .026 on the second . I oiled them up and put them in there new home .tourqued the rod bolts to 60 ft/lbs . I don't have a rod bolt stretch gauge but the shop who did the first build had them at 60 so I went with it. They fit nice in there with a piston to wall clearance of .006. Everything moves nicely now to assemble the top end

You don't see the ping marks on the valley pan rail too often.

60 ft lbs on a 7/16 Carrillo rod bolt is a bit light. I usually torque mine at 75.

I was kinda thinking the same thing I'm going to step it up . Even in the books I was reading they say 60-75 ftlbs

If you increase the torque it should be fine as long as your top side rod bolt is shortened. If it was just profiled to the side of the rod when the big end was re-sized it could cause a cam clearance problem if you increase the bolt torque.
