I finally got my car on the road. It was built pretty much from scratch. It has a CPT 66 turbo with a 3.5 inch down pipe. I open the dump today for the first time and was expecting the awesome sound of a turbo Buick. What I got was the sound of a V-6 with no muffler. You can barely hear the turbo spinning. Everytings hooked up and working but this thing doesnt sound like a TB. I'm confused. Anyone else have a 3.5 inch pipe that sounds like this?

How does it run? Does it make BIG power? If so.........who cares. Might need to add a new muffler bearing. They go bad if you don't replace the Blinker Fluid at engine build. To be honest......I HATE the sound of a Turbo Buick. It's a love/hate relasionship. Real engines have 8 cylinders. (or 2,240 cid 12 cylinders) These Turbo Buicks sound like a John Deere Tractor. I put in my favorite CD (Slim Whitman) at the track so I don't have to listen to a diesel tractor WHOOPIN' on a Big Block Chevy.:D

Smaller turbos have more whistle. P and Q trim turbos don't have the whislte like a stocker.

it all depends on your ex housing.if you have the tnetics .82 or pte .85 on your 66 p it wont make much noise,if you have the tnetics .63 it should be a whistler.

Uhhhh........anyway....

The Turbo is a 66 with I think a P trim. The housing is .63. My brother has the same turbo with a 3 inch DP and it sounds like a Turbo buick.

I'm pretty sure the thing is that since the pipe and dump are 3.5 it's revealing more of the motor sound which is drowning out the turbo. My first post was after uncapping it for the first time and driving it around my parking lot. After driving it home and getting used to the sound after a few years of not hearing it I feel it does sound pretty good. Just very loud. I picked up a friend and he said it definetely sounded like they all do but maybe a little louder.

I have a QTP Electric cutout I am going put on and if I don't do that I may just get a dump cap and put a 3 inch hole in it just for street driving and car shows.

Sorry. Just goofin around. Camshaft will have an effect on engine "tone", too. Headers have a big effect, too. There are just so many things that effect how an engine runs, which changes the tone/sound, too. If it runs rich they sound flatter, to. BIG turbos at idle kind of "twitter" when bumping the throttle. Some cars are more noticable than others. Over the last 25 years of owning/building these cars I have never liked the way they sound. Guess I'm just old school and love the sound of a V8 at 8,000 RPM screaming in my ear. (a V6 at 9,000 RPM under full boost is pretty cool, to, though. But at the typical 5800 and under they do sound like a tractor. That's why we have spent so much effort in developing the three muffler system. I prefere a quiet 750HP street sleeper. )

my brothers cammed TB sounds like a tractor...with 3" exhaust...you can only really here the turbo from the exhaust when he's above 5# of boost..
