I have a chance to buy an Optima yellow top deep cycle battery at a really good price. What issues are there with using a deep cycle battery in my GN?

none, as long as its not heavier

A Starting Lights and Ignition (SLI) battery is fine for that purpose and will last about 15 complete discharges, Any deep cycle will last about 300.

Description

The OPTIMA YellowTop

Demand more from your vehicle? Then get more from your battery. OPTIMA YellowTop batteries are made for the extremes. If you have an extreme vehicle, you expect high performance. Whether your vehicle is made to take the abuse of off-road driving or cranking out decibels, you need more from your battery. OPTIMA batteries with patented SPIRALCELL® Technology deliver that performance. The deep cycle characteristic of this technology coupled with its extreme resistance to vibration provides performance vehicles with the repetitive power they need in a spill-proof package.

If your vehicle has a lot of accessories like running lights, high-performance stereo/AV system, winches, or hydraulics, your vehicle demands more from its battery. OPTIMA YellowTOP batteries provide the extra performance and deep cycling capability that your vehicle demands.

Where loud comes from... OPTIMA Yellow Top batteries, featuring SPIRALCELL Technology, are designed for all of your deep cycle needs. It's perfect for people who are serious about sound. OPTIMA's power is cleaner with higher voltage output than conventional batteries. You can play your system louder and longer. And they have a greater cycle life so they can be drained and recharged more often. Plus, they're spill-proof and can withstand 15 times the vibration of ordinary batteries.

Sport Compact Power... The sport compact market has continued to grow in size and advance in technology over the last few years. New developments have created demanding electrical systems requiring a high performance deep-cycle automotive battery. OPTIMA batteries can meet the needs of more enthusiasts in the performance market. Our new group 51, 35 and 75/25 sizes are made just for your compact power needs.

Unequaled Vibration Resistance... Using OPTIMA SPIRALCELL Technology, cells are tightly compressed into supportive chambers, giving OPTIMA batteries over 15 times more vibration resistance than traditional batteries. This translates into longer battery life in high vibration applications.

Nonspillable... Due to its completely sealed case, the OPTIMA Yellow Top battery is extremely safe and corrosion resistant. Acid can't leak or spill, making them clean, user-friendly and environmentally sound. In addition, the maintenance free sealed case design eliminates the need to add water or clean terminals.

Dual Purpose (Starting and Deep Cycle) Batteries for Professional Use... OPTIMA YellowTop is made to install and forget. No matter the conditions, be it dampness, heat, dirt or exposure to extremes in vibration or regular discharge, you can count on OPTIMA to deliver uninterrupted power. OPTIMA's ability to hold a higher voltage during the discharge cycle makes it possible to utilize more of the stored power in the OPTIMA compared to ordinary batteries. The YellowTop handles many discharges as well as re-charges without losing significant capacity. OPTIMA is also ideal for seasonal use because of its very low self-discharge rate. That means you can store your seasonal vehicles all winter without regular charging and still spring out of the starting block when winter is over.

Its a great battery. I had 2 of them in my truck one to run the truck and one for the air ride.

They are decent batteries. Depending on where you buy it from they carry a 1 year free replacement. Generally they are heavier than standard batteries. If the Optima ever goes dead youd have to slow charge it for 12 hours to bring it back. Other than that there arent too many draw backs.

I have a friend that has one that is new, he wants $80 for it. I think I just may buy it.

If you get an Optima and if the cars sits much at all, do your self a huge favor and buy a good trickle charger. The alternator cannot charge an Optima that has been discharged even a little. I have one in my truck that I only drive about once a week. Every few months I put the charger on it to bring it back to full charge. Every time I park the Buick the first thing I do is put the charger on it. If that is done the Optima will last forever. I like mine but they are really heavy.

I pulled my red top, due to it being dead after sitting 2 days. I'm not familiar with the yellow or blue tops.

My Sears platnium has been reliable, even after sitting 3 weeks.

Optima

Same here pulled out brand new yellow top, replaced with Sears platnium, left stranded at Home Depot getting denatured alcohol.

I replaced 3 dead/dying Sears Die Hard Gold, had three of them die in an average of 2.5 years, gave up on their prorated warranty, with an Optima Yellow Top.

Going on 11 years now.

Driven a lot however, never stored, including winters.

The blue tops are Marine batteries. They also have the little threaded top posts.
