I just read an interesting thread which mentioned overfilling the tranny. How much is over filling? What will it do and what will it hurt?

i heard the same thing. it was said to add an extra quart.it helps keep pressure up.

It helps to keep fluid over the suction hole on the filter. The stock filter draws fluid from the top. Under acceleration fluid can get thrown to the back of the pan and could allow your top feeding filter to "suck air". Not good.

Overfilling is one option, you can also get a deep pan with a sump kit from PTS or a Art Carr deep pan and use the bottom feeding 700 filter.

Do you have to use a spacer to accomplish this with a stock pan? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks,

No, pan pulls up fine. Be careful of the pressure switch. Turn the filter so it misses the switch and use a piece of hose over the connection so it doesn't short out.

700r4 Filter

Russ, which 700 filter are you using? Aren't there two styles?

The one I have is wide and all plastic on the top side. It looks like it might be too wide to fit the VB.

By overfilling you are basically testing...

Once you KNOW this is a problem and the ONLY way to KNOW is to run with a pressure gauge and SEE if that is what is going on. After that, the 700 filter in a stock pan is NOT the cure.
Diagnois your problem then FIX it , do not band aid it.
One bad flair can kill any 2004r. Band or direct clutch.
The reason you don't want it overfilled all the time is eventually it will heat up and expand and it is usually after a hard run or street abuse. They will vent and get all over your car and at worst get under the tires and then you have a handfull. Overfilling is a test. Period. To run this way for an extended period of time and risking serious injury to your car and to you is silly. Then all sorts of blame will come out. Suppose you do this with a trans from vendor X and it vents due to overfilling and you wreck your car. You will be on the doorstep of the builder the next day and he did nothing wrong.
This "band aid" has contributed to many a wrecked cars, in turn blaming the trans when it in fact was the fact that it was overfilled. We spent many hours thinking and devoloping our sumps and pans to CURE this. Ask around. I have to admit, We have recieved more calls on this product than any other we produce. "Hey, my flar went away" and "Now, my pressures at wot are stable." These are true testimonials and a product that does exactly what it was intended to do. Even the Wheelstanders have noticed it. Like I say, ask around.
Also they are very light and dissapate heat genuinly faster. That is what t-6061 aluminum will do. Drain plug and all one of the best investments you can make to help or assist the 2004r to live.

WE4? Who the hell are you? :D The ghost returns, nice to have you back! That is why I have both PTS pan and bottom feeder filter on my GN, cause I know it is the cure. No bandaids allowed here. The 700 filter is better than the 200 set up and will get you by till you can save the big bucks for the BEST set up. I remember racing mine years ago with the stock pan and filter! :(
