Hello some of you here know me and most do not but I am a paint and body guy. I have been thinking of opening my own deal up and I want to be more towards the Buick brand as I know them well (mostly 68-72) But I have done several T Types and a couple GNs so I know them decently also. I plan to post this around to the other turbo boards to get the most out of it I can. My questions are as follows......

*What is the average cost of a complete paint job that most have spent to make it look good?

*Was that job a complete strip to the bare metal?

*Did the body shop dismantal the car down so that NO masking lines were showing?

*If you knew it would be done right does distance bother you?

*What was the thing that the shop did that disappointed you the most?

Thanks for taking my survey!!

Michael,

I just got an estimate from a local shop to paint my 72 Skylark. There estimate was right at $4900 to strip the car to bare metal(including removing all trim). Repair a couple of minor rust bubbles, have the bumpers recromed and paint the car with PPG base coat clear coat. A friend of mine is having a 65 Chevelle done and it is going to cost him about 5500. It's in similar condition to mine but will require a new trunk pan. From what I've seen this is pretty reasonable but alot to invest in a car that isn't inherently valuable like a Skylark. If somebody could do a similar job in the $3000 range I would definitely be willing to travel for that. Hope this helps.

Mike

a friend of mine just had a GNX done. stripped, taken apart (even 1/4 windows) if it was able to be removed, it was, painted & reassembled. looks AWSOME!!! ABOUT $5500. I'm taking my car to a local guy to look @ smooth the firewall, remove drip edge, fiberglass doors, ect. I will post back his estimate.

How about when we come across a paint guy that does not take out the 1/4 windows ,we beat him sensless....what is it like a F"ning hour more worth of work.F@ck I hate that..............
I did some checking a while back and to media blast a car to bar metal was around $550

have you ever had a car blasted? I have & I don't think I will ever again! it's been 2 years now & I'm still getting that crap from all the little cracks & crevesses. this car was totally dismantled, nothing but an empty shell.

well back from the body shop & here is the deal.

strip the car to bear metal
finish welding in 2 floor pans
remove drip edge
smooth firewall (weld no bondo)
install fiberglass doors including finding a way to install the 1967 wing window in a 1968 door) & adding a smooth style door handle
weld all emblem holes closed
paint all interior including cage
moving front & rear window windows out flush to the body, no chrome, black rubber gasket.
roll inner fender well lip
car to be painted in 50th anniversary vette red / burgundy

any guesses? anyone?

Steve,

I say $7K---beautiful color(think it will show every flaw)-----your car is already cool----it would be gorgeous after this

Just got a quote on my car to have all the rust spots removed some need to be cut out, fully dissembled and painted, now this is without stripping to bare metal. He said it shouldnt need to be stripped to bare metal because the overall paint isnt that bad it just has rust on the bottom of the doors and the rear quarters price was 3500. Should I get it stripped to bare metal? He said that would probably be around an extra 1500.

5000 seems to be about average assuming no major body work is required, a GOOD and PROFESSIONAL shop will remove all the things that can be removed. My biggest pet peave is when they just thow the emblems back on "just anywhere close" without actually marking or noting how and where they are supposed to be. (lesson learned: measure, record and photograph placement, then bring to shop without them)

about $6,000.oo

This is all good stuff !!!! Altho I have known about all this stuff and it all has been apart of what I do anyway.

I do like to take a car completely apart. I do NOT EVER "test drive" customers cars (without them being in the car that is the ONLY exception)

Emblems well what you said above is true (PICTURES)

I have a plan for the Paint room so far and I was going to build it to be basicly 30x30 so I can paint a car totally dismantalled. I was asking about prices to see if the $4000-7000 price was in order depending on the amount of repairs to be made and that seems to be in order too. I only need land now!!
