Hey Guys how are you doing. I have Chrome bumpers that had been painted over with black paint and clear coat. I remember the chrome was good and i want my chome bumpers back instead of black because the car will be getting a different paint job eventually. The Question is will i be able to use a paint thinner or stripper without hurting my chrome. I remember the chrome bumpers were not sandblasted or sanded or bulldogged for grip during the painting process but i was wondering if the chrome should still be good. Im sure some good ole Mothers Chrome polish could help if at all.

sure - chrome is some tough stuff.
you can use fine steele wool as well

hey thanks ZAM.

Hey Zam im curious also about the rubber molding on the chrome bumpers. Will they be affected? Melt? smear? anything or is ok to just douse the bumper in thinner? I think the stripper might melt the runner huh?

remove the rubber strips....easy to do.

Anything that will eat paint will eat rubber.

I wouldn't get to harsh with the chemical...if there is a bad spot in the chrome or the chrome is "weak" it could peel or etch (bad).

Try a small spot first and don't use anything stronger than you need.

Yes the plastic impact strips will be ruined. You will have to remove and/or replace.

As long as you take the plastic impact strip and the rubber "bumperettes" off, you can use a paint stripper with no problems. For the most part, there is nothing you can buy from your basic auto parts store that will take the chrome plating off. Just don't scrape on it with anything metallic or sand-blast it and you will be fine. Aircraft grade stripper is thick and will stay in place and work quicker. H.T.H.
