I am thinking about painting my car and was wondering how to deal with the area around the rear side windows. Hoe do you remove the trim or do most just mask off and paint. I hate tape lines and normally remove all trim when I paint but this looks like a pita.

REMOVE THE WINDOWS!!!
this is the only way to do it and have it come out correct.
Its not a hard job to do either.

I agree with Otto.

There is no "Trim" around the quarter glass. Its all one peice. Take the sail panels out and there should be some 10mm "nuts" that hold it in. You might have to use a little pressure because there is also sealer around it too.

Definitely-remove the inner trim and undo the glass-you may need a utility knife or windshield removal tool to cut through all the goop (and it doesn't clean very easily either)

It kills me when people pain around them! Take them out i was able to push them out of my brothers monte with a lot of force and a catcher on the other side, but its easy and great looking after!

+1 on the sealer. It can feel as if it's really stuck but it'll come out.

Someone should seriously make slightly larger opra window seals for those windows that have been taped around. This would help alot of crappy looking tape jobs.

My technique for removing them was to let them sit in the sun all day, remove the attachments, then lay on my back in the rear seat and push them out with my feet.

That works, but another way is once the 10mm retaining nuts are removed you can stick a screw driver up between the glass and the retaining lip and gently pry it out, little by little, going from one side of the window to the other, top to bottom. No problem. ;)

When my car was built they must have decided to use 20 pounds of sealer- that stuff went everywhere and made a mess when I popped them out to paint.

Just make sure you have on a good set of rubber gloves when you deal with removing these and cleaning the "tar"!

When I've replaced the quarter windows after painting, I didn't use any sealer. It really isn't necessary, especially that butyl $hit.

heat gun works wonders...i just took mine out and had very little sealer left over on the body to remove - comes out very easy with the heat!

Do NOT paint the car without removing the quarter glass. The owner before me did not have the side glass removed when he had it painted, so they masked off the glass and sprayed the rubber seal around the glass. Looks horrible and after a few years started to peel. They also didnt remove any trim or bumpers when they painted. Its the thing I hate the most about my car. Just cant afford a quality paint job.

Same here. Whoever had my car before I did had it painted from black to white....no they didn't remove the quarter glass or any of the drip rail moldings when they painted...they didn't even remove the damn door glass rubber seals either....so as you can figure there's areas of black that show up, fortunately it takes a fairly well trained eye to catch it. One area that does stand out is the door jambs which were not correctly prepped. Overall the car still looks good but still I am one that does not like half assed paint jobs. Do it right or just don't do it at all.

Same here also, only mine is still black, but you can see where the window was masked...along with my tail lights, tail light trims were painted gloss black, also the trim along the edge of the trunk. Took me about an hour to buff out the black paint off each of the tail lights. The paint job has purple, blue metallic dust like particles in the black, looks beautiful, but the masking job sucked big time. Even the trim on the front windshield was not masked, they painted right over it with some semi-gloss black. The wheel well trims were replaced with chrome ones by them, and painted over with semi-gloss black. No wonder the paint is coming off. Dickweeds.

Been correcting all of this little by little. I hate half assed paint jobs, too. What do you expect for $5000? A great job? Hell no! My late Dad had it painted...one week later, it was stolen. But got it back one month later. Still with the half assed paint job.

Sad part about it...those clowns are still in business. You wouldn't believe the dirty trick they pulled on Dad, but that's a story for another day when you're all bored or drunk.:p

Thanks I'll take them out and remove the bumpers and light bezels etc...
Mine has the door guard strips down the sides too... I assume a heat gun will help remove those and all the emblems ? I hope I can reuse most of the badges ..those suckers are expensive !!
