What color should I go with? My car from the factory is black, it's a T-Type with chrome bumpers.

I feel like maybe I should do something different since its going down to bare metal and its a lot of work.

Cyber gray metallic?

I like some of the metallic greenish blue teal colors.

Only thing is I don't know if I should attempt a metallic paint job as my first.

Also should I paint car with header panel rear quarter extensions and bumper fillers off or on the car?

I'm worried about primer showing from between the gaps after so many years?

For the best results remove as much as possible, quarter glass, handles, reveal mouldings, belt mouldings, handles mirrors and such.

Hey, it's your car so do as you please, I'm still kicking myself in the a$$ for not going different, I myself had a metallic silver/gray or white in mind...Mike

I think its a cool color.

I'm no painting expert but I've heard that if you decide to take panels off the car they need to be shot upright or in the same position they sit on the car. Otherwise if sprayed while laying flat the metallics can lay differently giving you a different look compared to a panel shot upright. Again, not an expert but something you should confirm.

I have everything off you listed but I'm worried about spraying them off the car and they don't turn out right.

Don't worry about it. Its easier to fix one small part than the whole thing. Start with some small parts and see how u like. One thing too is it will only be as good as the materials u use. Metallic is easy also. The few ways really to mess up is getting it too wet and in some colors too light and streaking it from not spraying it even. If you need any help just pm me. I will try to help if I can. Also get u something like a flat panel to test on.

I've got a black t with the chrome package too. I'll be keeping mine black with the chrome bumpers but will be doing the rest of the trim black. I think all the chrome is just too much on a black car although it does give a nice sleeper look.
As far as painting, if it's your first time head to a wrecker and pick up some junk panels and practice. Yes paint can be expensive but it's the best way to learn.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help, do you have any pictures you can post?

I've got a few posted in the members rides section. They were posted within the last month so you shouldn't have to go back too far to find them. I bought the car and parked it till next spring so don't have many pics yet.

I wouldn't ever try to discourage someone from making his ride the car of his dreams but changing colors on a vehicle is probably a lot more difficult, time consuming and much, much more costly than you might imagine.

If it is to be done right, bear in mind that you will have to de-trim the entire car, all the chrome, badging, window trim, door seals and you will need to remove the opera windows and deck lid trim piece between the window and trunk lid.. the windshield and back glass should come out ,too. This is just off the top of my head. There's more, much, much more.

When painting, you will have to cut in the door jams and sills, trunk, hood, fillers and get the new color (and clear, if you go 2 stage) on any painted part/surface that will ever be exposed to the eye.

Like I said, I'm not trying to discourage you, I just want you to be aware of the possible nightmare and expensive lesson you might be setting yourself up for.

I wish you the best of luck, sir.

You can paint metallics, pearls or even tricoats off the car. Just make sure to mix enough paint all at once so as you spray parts one at a time you are using the same batch of paint. Use the same air pressure, and temperature of reducer. Use same color primer underneath each part, and count the coats on each. As stated, try to paint each part hanging as it will on the car. I usually paint most of my parts hanging off the car so I have no tape lines and looks factory and it saves me time against the flat rate. I very rarely cut in the jambs. I do some creative taping and paint all at once.

The only thing on my car still is the front windshield and rear glass. It's completely apart lol.
