I've got the engine out being rebuilt. I'm adding some chrome and want things to look nice. Any recommendations on painting the engine compartment. Just use same paint as exteriior. What about the plastic wheel wheels. Any help on what to expect or what out for would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

To correctly do the firewall it should be painted the same color as the exterior. If you have a GN it should be a gloss black, not really a shiny black as they didn't use a clearcoat or buff and polish it like they did on the outside. I have used a paint prep type degreaser like 3-M prep-sol(sorry I dont have a part #) to make the plastic wheelhouse look brand new. After all the dirt is removed wipe them down with armour-all. The Eastwood under hood black could be used on the metal portion of the inner fenders and on the radiator support. Its hard to match the factory finish on these pieces as they were dipped and the coating was applied by electrolisious(sic) leaving a thin film of black on them.

So you are saying not to paint the plastic wheel wells. Just degrease and armoral (after rest of the metal is painted) I do have a paint gun. So I'm assuming my local body shop paint store will have some paint comparable to eastwood's. (that could handle the heat under the hood.
thanks

FROM THE EASTWOOD CATALOG:

"Underhood Black is the correct shade of black, having just the right 10-20% semigloss finish most car manufacturers used.

This acrylic lacquer withstands up to 250 degrees F and goes on thin for a satin smooth finish."

Go to the best body shop supply store in your town and tell them this is what you're needing...they can mix a custom blend for you to come close to the Eastwood paint.

Go to Wal-Mart's camping/boating section & pick up a bottle of 3M Marine Vinyl & Plastic Protectant to use on your super-cleaned inner fenderwells. Hold up MUCH better than any product we've found for exterior use.

Keep us posted!

Is this what you've used? : http://www21.3m.com/dr/v2/Ec_Main.e...07613&doc_id=1&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0

3M Prep Solvent 70, PN 08983
Low VOC, water based solvent used to remove oils, wax, grease, and silicone from surfaces prior to coating.

Just wondering if it makes a good general purpose cleaner for road dirt, tar, and such.
