to lock up the converter. How is it implemented? It's just shorting two pins in the ALDL port, right? Which two pins?

Does it work if there is no VSS in the car?

It's the top right and top left ports on the ALDL, it works without the VSS, just locks the converter right when it gets into 2nd gear. It's always been worth around a tenth on my GN, I have it on a rocker switch in the ashtray.

Upper left and upper right aldl ports tied together lock the torque convertor at any point driven past first gear.

Usually used only at the track and it makes the torque convertor more efficient and my car dropped 1.5 tenths and gained 2mph.

Eric can burn this into a computer chip to set at any MPH depending on where your car likes the convertor locked.
My car likes immediate lock in 2nd, so i use the paperclip, but if a higher horsepower motor, usually locked at 83MPH.

It shouldnt be used everyday, eventually the clutch plate in the convertor will wear out..

ummmm...we gained .3/.4 and 3/4 mph anyway in all of our cars  :p oh we drive with a rocker switch ready to go on the street .. been doin this since 1989:eek: no blown up converters... yes we do have a tranny cooler  this was in mid 11 stock engine cars .. ummm high hp cars like it to

Dan,

Are you saying 3 to 4 tenths and/or 3 to 4 mph?

If so, that makes me feel better.

Way back in 1989 when my car had the simple tricks... "crushed" fuel pressure regulator... whatever the chip of the day was... K&N... a test pipe... and the paper clip trick on my street tires I ran a 13.0 at 108 mph.

I sold the car in 1990 and bought it back a year or so ago. It has a different engine in it now, with some "better" stuff and it ran 13.2 at 102 on drag radials... with no paper clip trick.

Maybe with the paper clip I could have beat my old time.

Eric

all cars have different gains and like being locked at different speeds. cant wait to try it out on my brothers car.

PS... Dan then you must remember the TorqueMaster!

Still have some paper work on the TorqueMaster by T-Force advertised .4 sec. cut /4-5mph gain in 1/4 mile. Limited introductory price of 79.95 to GSCA members.

I'd just ground the top left (F) terminal via a switch so you can control when you want lock-up to occur. I believe the top right terminal (A) also serves as just a ground.

It's likely your gains from conv'r lock-up will be greater if it's not locked up just after hitting 2nd gear w/ "paper clip" method.

What about for highway cruising? Since I have no VSS my converter isn't locking up. Since my converter isn't locking up, I am losing gas mileage. So is it OK to use this trick to lock up the converter on the highway until I get my VSS issues taken care of?

Should work just fine!

Time to bring back the TorqueMaster.. I think the current crop of sucker..ummm.... Buick owners are ready for that product ;)

Yes, from the factory the convertor was locked to get more MPG...

I should have stated that it shouldnt be locked up for racing it on the streets pass after pass.... Locking its fine, but they do wear out quicker if you abuse them.
