Dec 2011 Super Chevy has a small pic of my 66 Chevelle in their "Back in the Day" column. Was at a car show yesterday and someone I know came up to me and told me about it. Hit Barnes & Noble on the way home and sure enough a picture of me cleaning the motor compartment is in there! Picture was taken in 1983 at Super Chevy Sunday at Maple Grove Raceway in PA. This was way before I pro streeted the car. Was running a tunnel rammed 427 with nitrous and Doug Nash 5 speed at the time.

The day before leaving for the show I bent a valve on the way to fill up with gas. Limped home, ripped off the head and had the machine shop fix it. Put everything back together and left for the show in the middle of the night, yes I drove it there from CT. Ended up winning best modified Chevelle and best modified Chevelle motor. This was at the first Super Chevy ever at Maple Grove. Car was also shot for a feature and made it into Super Chevy a couple times when it was red. Was worth all the headaches.

Years later it was featured on the cover and centerfold after I pro streeted it. Guess I will write them a letter/email and let them know I have abandoned Chevys a long time ago to join the Turbo Buick ranks. The poor Chevelle was sold in 1995 after being in over 20 car magazines when we were expecting a child and didn't think the car was family friendly and a Grand National would be. After 16 years the Chevelle is in the next town over after having lost track of it for about 15 years.

Don't remember the car when it was red but I do remember when it was blue and cruising the turnpike in the early 90's. Very nice car and miss seeing it.

Pretty Cool! I also have seen pictures of it on the boards where it was blue, very nice!

That super chevy editor made some not so nice comments about stage one Buicks in an editorial. I stopped reading it after that. Cool pix though. I think you should let them know your whereabouts, and that Buicks are better.

Ya want pics, we got pics! This picture in the mag got me motivated to finally scan some stuff I have including many car mag features. Will start posting them here from the earliest so you can see how the car morphed over the years. First batch is the earliest I could find of it in 1976, it started out as a Malibu, 327 car with 3 speed manual.

Digging the grumpy lump hood scoop, first paint job was enamel Honduras Maroon with a new vinyl top. Love the mismatched wheels and four wheeler stance.

Drove to the 79 Street Machine Nationals in Indy and drove it on the track. Lost the grumpy lump scoop before I drove it out to Indy. By the time I went to the Nats I had also switched out the junk 67 rear bumper I had on it and had matching Cragar SS wheels all around. Also swapped in a Muncie M-21 4 speed.

Earliest shot of my 327, crusty! Then a little more cleaning up. Decided to clone an SS and found a hood and got all the emblems at the local Chevy dealer! Removed the vinyl top and had the roof painted and the next year went to the Nationals again and had the car shot by Jeff Smith of Car Craft and got featured in glorious black and white! Notice how the stance of the car was dropped down. Was a poser though, still running a small block. Back then a lot of SS cars already blew up their big blocks and a lot of people threw small blocks in them to keep the car on the road.

Now we started getting serious, built a 427 with a tunnel ram, dual Holleys and nitrous, put in a Doug Nash 5 speed (now Richmond) transmission that I bought new. Neighbor was painting cars in a barn and charged me a whopping $750 for a lacquer paint job. I stripped the car down to bare metal and he did the body work and shot it. Barn was right next to the CT shoreline main railroad line and a week after taking the car out of there a train derailed right thru the parking lot where we had pushed the car outside to wash it! Painted it Spectre Red which I had seen on believe or not a CHEVETTE at the local Chevy dealer.

The magazine pic in this group was the one taken at Super Chevy at Maple Grove. 2nd page of feature will be with next group of photos. Night before going to the Super Chevy show I bent a valve on the 427, thrashed all night on it and got it running in the early morning and drove off to PA from CT. Ended up winning best modified Chevelle and best Chevelle motor.

And now the car magazine appearances started big time. Super Chevy was first, then Popular Hot Rodding since they were in the same publishing company and they shared files. Became friends with Steve Reyes, photographer for Super Chevy/ Popular Hot Rodding. Very interesting guy. Had him up to CT a couple times to shoot other friends cars for the magazines and he shot my Chevelle again when I pro streeted it later. Popular Hot Rodding actually featured the car 3 years apart with pics from the same photo session. Not sure if Steve helped me out with that or not? During this period it also got in Auto Buff magazine, (the one that used to feature topless babes with the cars!), also got on the cover of High Performance Chevy guide, was in a magazine called Muscle Cars and Car Craft again (another black and white feature shot by Tim Marshall) Tim and Steve were old school drag racing photographers who started working for the magazines. Lots of wild pictures from drag racings glory days were taken by them. Funny looking at these pics after all these years, you can see all the different wheel choices and air filter combos I used.

Having some trouble with the pics, can't seem to delete the duplicate one I posted, oh well!
