..and got a little bonus. the trans is one of the really old 700r4's that use the same torque converter as the 200-4r we all know and love. pulled the trans apart from the block and popped the converter out to see if it was anything special- and i find "D5" stamped all around the perimeter.
i know it's a good converter and trans- it was in an 86 Camaro that shifted awesome and the fluid looks brand new after 3 years of abuse. i always thought that thing had a little bit of a stall to it, and now i know why.
oh, and one more quick question: what is supposed to be the stock converter in my 84- the one i have is "A6" or "A9" if it's stamped like the D5 is with the letters upside down from each other- and how does the D5 compare to it?

Is the little sticker with the 4-digit code still on the converter? It would normally be a DE** or DG** code which would be a 1639 or 1425 stall respectively.

Good deal then. I was meaning to say that the codes I gave you an example of would be normally found in the 86 Camaro you got the trans/engine combo out of. I have a built 700 here for sale that is updated internally except for the 27 spline input and a CB8F coded D5 ATCS converter. Hopefully yours has updated roller clutch and sprag assemblies and at minimun a Corvette servo. You could sell it and put that into the car. :)

the trans itself is from an S10 but is rebuilt, and the torque converter was bought from the "just arrived" shelf at a place that sells cores.
i know the D5 is good, becasue it was behind a mild 350 in the Camaro for a couple of years. that motor never felt as peppy in any other car it was in, and now i kinda know why.
i figure the trans and converter are worth the $300 i paid for the motor and trans, and the 2 year old Edelbrock intake and rebuilt 87 TPI heads are just icing on the cake.

Damn... My built 700's go for $800 after I update them. You should be able to get more than that for the trans converter combo if the trans is updated internally. If it is a stock rebuild with the smaller fwd sprag and the small low roller one-way, then it will go for less. Hopefully yours is better for more $$.

the D5 converter is going in my T Type when the stock trans goes back together, and i might sell the trans to buy some parts for the 200-4r.
