I cant believe a little rubber raft can float up to a large vessel like that and take it over. I could not believe the Russians through them overboard to the sharks Talk about sending the message:eek:

The insurance/banking industry that are close pals to the British and American Administrations; prefer to see this situation not remedied.
You see with the current threat, shipping insurance rates get very expensive and the majority of ships are not affected. So I doubt you will see ANY kind of policy change.
Its the New World we live in.

I'd like to see that also, but unfortunately countries have very specific rules stating that merchant vessels cannot carry weapons into their waters.......that would make them warships. Hell, I don't think they can even carry handguns on their ships. If our border patrol agents can't carry weapons into Mexico, what makes you think other countries will allow merchant marines pack a .50 cal?

just tell them that if we aren't allowed into their ports, then they don't get to trade with us or get any military protection or humanitarian aid from us..

We should have a dummy boat sailing around the area fully loaded and ready to kill! When the pirates attempt to hijack it then the military pops out and cuts them all down. No one would know and other pirates would keep coming and have the same fate!

F EM!

we could also have our Navy SEALS and Marines board random US ships while they are in international waters for protection detail- the pirates wouldn't know if the ship they are thinking about going after would have military on it, so they might think a little harder before going after it.
as far as small ships like personal yachts- unless they have some way to protect themselves, they are on their own. they have to know that it's dangerous in that part of the world, so if they are stupid enough to go there, then they deserve what they get. as the saying goes- "stupid should hurt".

?

just a question boarding a small craft/ pleasure boat is pulling along side pretty easy!
but to pull along side a oil tanker or cargo ship I'am sorry give the devil it due I've climb both up and down landing nets " lots of ropes" ladders with everyone working together was not easy each boat bouncing up and down moving in and out at different rates at different times other Marines or sailors helping you out they have some big ones but again a small craft along side can be crushed it make no since I thought congress had approved onboard military escorts through that area. As far as yatchs the word moron, comes to mind. let face it if you tell some people the house is on fire they will run not walk to get inside A simple answer is preditors fly over water too. they can trail our boats anything looks hokie they have things that go boom As Dennis says it time for it to stop can we stop it yes will we no You have to have a set, Carter didn't neither does our current occupant. Until we have a leader who does what he says we will lose sending a skirt to a gun fight unless a Marine not going to be pretty.

From what I have read most of these pirates are pretty well armed, RPGs and the like. After all they have collected millions and have the money to buy most any weapon.

And I think most US vessels have been told not to fight. IIRC the US told American ships to not have any weapons on board. Typical of our kiss their a$$ administration.

I would think we have enough to highly trained military to set up a floating military base at each end. Then when a American vessel heads into the zone man it with a platoon of heavily armed military. They can be dropped off at the floating base at the other end. I can't imagine it taking more than 6-8 platoons to have enough to ride each ship in and out.

And if the other countries do the same that should put the pirates out of business.

This was an editorial by a journalist named Michael Peck that I found online. Just thought I'd share it.

Interesting concept about how Russia handled the issues. However, as Americans we could never do what they did in concerning the held diplomats.

I think we on the other hand brought 1-2 of the pirates back here for justice which cost us even more time and money.

You wonder how many pirates are operating? The problem is not going to go away based on the poor economy of the country. Escorting various shipsin that area of the world is time consuming and adds to additional costs no matter what country does it.

That additional cost is going to be tacked on to the end consumer. As others have stated somehow you got to reach and rescue the 600 plus hostages granted some loss of life would be expected but if it continues all the numbers increase as does the problems.

Their only means of transportation on the high seas is by boat. You don't need to upset the world and kill or imprison the pirates per say, initally destroy their sea going vessels and make sure they understand the next go around the world will not be so forgiving.

Good points about the civilians that have sailed into trouble which presents even more problems. The latest now involves I believe 2 teenage kids....

Its true you see it on TV all the time a flash flood and someone thinks they can drive through the raging water and make it. They fail to grasp the fact that only a few inches of rushing water can be dangerous.

Obviousily, we seem to be in the dark in America as to just how many vessels and how many mlllions of dollars have these pirates reaped in ill gains since they started.

We hear about it once in awhile when Americans are involved. Maybe our government will surprise us and actually has some massive plan in the works that we don't know about. Problem is if they do now compounding is the other Libya issue. I think our military is stretched pretty thin with the current war and no draft etc.

Good points about merchant ships not carrying weapons, not to mention like I said they may have signed up for the love of the sea, but not to be worried about pirates and possible death if no ransom is paid.

The Mexico thing its hard to fathom how many killings and brutal killings happens in Mexico. Can you imagine running a tourist business trying to drum up business for Americans to go to Mexico?

The nitely news anymore is just tough to watch......sad.....

If that is true....that is a terrible way of simply letting it continue. I don't think the 600 plus hostages like that theory a whole lot.

I agree maybe it isn't a lot of vessels per say but like we just witnessed 3 countries in turmoil with their leadership getting toppled or almost toppled
its not much of a stretch to think pirates may emerge elsewhere in shipping lanes based on the millions to be gained.

"Walk softly and carry a big stick" sorry for us that would be Political incorrect and under the current administration unacceptable we are to be everyone's friend and allie.
We shall take a back seat to any and all. Since vietnan we have lost the our way
The Military no long stands alone in strength, technology or intellegence capabilites. We must ask permission to do our job weather peacekeeping or fighting a war,the line has become blurred. We fight a battle of circumstance if they shoot at you and the bullet is with in 2 ft then you may duck if it wounds you, you may execute evasive measures "duck and run" We nolonger believe you kill one of mine I'll kill ten of yours

America spoke only when pushed! Like the old west sheriff would say to the lynch mob I have a shotgun with two barrels and a six gun with six bullets.
I promise I will take eight of you with me! who want to be first?

We have gone from a nation of sleeping Giant to toilet paper Dragon We have satillites that can tell if the pirates hangs left or right. we have seal and recon teams that you can drop by sub and destroy ships, planes, houses and village's. Not Politically Correct.
Can something be done yes, the problem is 40 years ago top secret ment you don't tell, when an order was given you carried it out you also didn't annouance what you were going to do on the 6 oclock news, film at eleven!

As you said The russians dropped them off and sent them on there way Russia statzi leave nothing to chance. The American people have been and are apothetic if it's not them they don't care. the Ideals of freedom is what we have, we've alway had and always will!

How we got that Freedom and what it requires to maintain it is obivious to our youth Our Kids can tell you how long it take to recycle a can or how many it takes to make a car, But they can't tell you what Veterans day is who the 2nd President was or who writes the laws of the land?

they think Pirates are cool A simple Question if A Pirate put a gun to your head do you ask how much moneys in his pocket, did he eat today or what kind of house does he live in or where does he live None of the above!

you hope that a Marine sniper is taking up the trigger slack until we stop running our mouths as a nation and start doing! it will not change

No one fears the big mouth, it's the quiet guy reloading his magazine that that makes you think twice just saying:cool:

Well said......

We have seen plenty examples of us (Americans) sitting by while this happens. Vietnam, is my only experience which just dragged on and on now I wear sneakers that say made in Vietnam.

For most Americans it has to seem strange that a bunch of pirates with little education and technolgy can continue to operate with very little risk.

We are too soft and like you said it would be on the news at 11 that we exercised too much muscle or a few lives got lost.
