I need help figuring out what turbo i should go with.

Stock block/bottom end, ported stock heads, 212/218 cam, ported intake, 3" FMIC, RJC PP, 3400 stall converter, and a 3" DP.

There is a 70GTQ that i could probably get, is that too much turbo for me?

Too much?....never.

Is this car going to be used as a strict street, half and half, or just strip?

If a 1/2 and 1/2 I would go with the GT6776 or 6775 (I forget what they are calling the new version).

There are plenty of people using that turbo in a driver application then going to the track and tearing off high 10's.

PM PaCemkr86.

With that cam choice you will need more stall to be happy. 3600-3800 `ish.
I.E. serious lag. With a perfect tune in might not be bad.

Or, throw in a stroker kit!

It is going to be 1/2 and 1/2, mostly street though. I would LOVE to get a 6776, but I cannot justify spending $1300 on a turbo! when i can get something else that works ALMOST as good for $600-$700. So I think i am going to be looking for something used.

That stock bottom end really limits you, unless you are willingly going to blow up the motor so you can rebuild it. Otherwise there is no point to a huge turbo that you can't use to its full potential on a stock motor. Just my opinion.

Brian, will he need more converter even if he goes with a Dual BB turbo?

I agreee with Turbo6Chicago about the stock bottom end. I am guilty of this but I only plan on running 20-21 psi. I know that I could still spit the crank out if I detonate bad but hopefully the motor will last a little longer at those conservative boost levels. It sure feels good even at 21 psi. As soon as those ET streets come in I will head to the track and see what 21 psi gets me in the 1/4.:)

Any opinions on running a 6776 non BB turbo??

you really think im gonna blow it up if i go with a 70? Hmmmm now you guys got me worried!

I dont think there is any benefit in running a GTQ on a stock bottom. 6776 is plenty

just because ya have more than ya need doesn't mean ya have to use it  plus it's a DEAL !!! oh ya....we did run it for a while with a stock bottom end  ummmm the thread poster was thinking about a 70  oh people have blown up bottom ends with stock turbo's ;)

Yeah but why spool a huge turbo if you aren't going to use it all...

Install a really loose stall converter to spool a big turbo and then not have the bottom end to handle it? It's pointless.

Only go with what you need. There IS such a thing as matching a turbo to your application, none of this "get a huge turbo and grow into it". There ARE adverse affects for going too big when you don't really need it.

What is your long term goal for the car? If you are planning to keep the stock bottom end I'd say wait for a smaller turbo. They are out there for sale used too. It would be a lot happier for street use. If your goal is high 9's (if that is what this turbo is designed for) I'd buy the bigger turbo and live with the side effects until you have the converter and bottom end to hold the power.

Building any car to run right is in the combination. Pick a goal and start building your parts to get there. Decide if you want to keep the stock bottom end and then you will have your answer.
