Listen while u can:). Once everyone goes digital listening equipment will get real expensive.

It will be nice not to have to see all the fire-fighter wannabees showing up at every fire trying to film everything. Gets annoying after a while especially when they block the road:rolleyes:.

I will admit tho, tow truck operators listen to them often and actually locate cars that dispatch puts BOLO's out for so I guess they can be good for some things. Most everyone will be going digital sooner or later making most all scanner useless.

I think there is a way to get around digital & be able to listen.

75% of the time yes there is a way to find another broadcast for the digitial stuff.... even some of the federal stuff you can listen to if you want :eek  but they use some code words so its hard to understand at first

Last night some of the Cleavland Officers (not cop) were doling out SS numbers & DOB's YIKES!

This is another of the reasons I don't like public access to those frequencies. If I stop someone and run them, I can do it several ways, name/dob, name/state i.d., or name/SSN, often times other personal information is passed to dipatch during investigations. We try to use the cell phone as much as possible, but sometimes it's not. With identity theft a real problem these days, you never know who's listening.

I do, but it's tied to cell phones. I've worked with the MDT/MDS since 1997, I think it was. Oregon is very mountainous (is that a word?). Cells dont work very well. Most agencies in Oregon dont have them because they are small agencies, or do but reception is spotty.

Sounds like your state and or county needs to update both its internet and cad system before upgrading the radios.....

hell one of the local departments does all there dispatching entirely from the mdt's the only time they really use the radio is for simplex officer to officer communication.

It sounds like we have a few police officers on this thread. I see where GNBrett said that the radio frequencies were not made public "by law" Would one of you officers do some research on this because I disagree? No offense brett but I used to be a deputy sheriff here in my county and when my class was in training we were told that the government did make it mandatory to make the radio frequencies public knowledge. They said it was for the general public safety. I will try to research this also.

No doubt. That's why I said it will get expensive:cool:. Didn't say it would not be possible. People will always find a way but doubtful you'll be able to do it from Radio Shack where most of the scum bag Drug dealers go for them.

True. In Salem NH there is a dealer that will outfit certian scanners to get the PD calls...but boy does it co$t

Its seems that the peanut gallery has made their case for "I know whats best for the public" attitude. I guess thats why there are video machines in police cars and now on police officers themselves. So the public has a right to see the abuse that some cops do. If you know anything about the law that you enforce you would know why the public can listen to police frequencies. I have always been pro law but the public has rights too, even the scumbags.
Thats why we live here in the USA not in a communist state. Sean I have seen you be an idiot more than once on this board, so I hope you take offense to this. Just to let you know, I have a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and have worked with law enforcement for 15 years. Jumping in with your so called correctiveness towards a Legend who was kind enough to grace us with his presence and knowledge and acted like a 20 yr old Punk with your smart coments, like you always do...

See Ya!

Worked with Law Enforcement? What exactly does that mean? Were you the janitor in the police department or something? I would just assume so with all the GARBAGE coming out of your mouth:rolleyes:.

There is Video is Police cars to protect the Police Officer Einstein, not the Public. Kinda like when Jackasses like you develop diahrreah of the mouth and start acting like a jackass and then get arrested for creating a public disturbance. The video is there to supports a conviction (DUI, Police Pursuit, etc...) not to record the abuse that .0000001% of the cops out there engage in:rolleyes:. Are you really that slow to actually post something so retarded?

For a so-called well educated man your pretty ignorant actually! A Bacheluor degree? So what? Everyone has a bachelor. Chit, you can order them online. Was that sopposed to impress someone here? Cause I can assure it it didn't by a long shot.

No street lawyer, when SCUMBAGS get arrested they waive most of those rights. In jail you don't have the right to leave do you? So yea, they do loose their rights as they should.

You must have been born on Fantasy Island cause your common sense meter is dangerously in the RED zone.

WTF does a communist state have to do with Police scanners? Go back to ur crack-pipe.

Can't believe people actually think like that.

Usually when scanners are known to be present in regards to a specific call, the dispatchers in Chicago will send the job to a particular beats computer. The problem with that is if the job was not asssigned to me, I find myself often times doing unit searches on the computer to get the specific information printed in the remarks section of the job. It only takes a few minutes to find it and read it but that could be the difference in a possible arrest going good, bad, or not at all. A few years ago there was a crew knocking off autozones (I remember they had hit like 10 times) and they were seen numerous times by the workers in possession of a scanner. That information was countered with special verbage (spoken by the dispatchers)noticeable only to Police that would alert the units to the robbery in progress. The cars would see the job on the computer ONLY and respond. It worked real well and responding units arrived while the 3 Offenders were still in the store and smoked one of the Offenders dropping him right in front of the checkout counter (no pun intended) after he triesd to shoot at the Police. The other two tried to run out the back delivery doors and were grabbed right outside. Great story but the those guys were running wild because of the use of a scanner. It was known that responding units on the previous sucessful robberies were just a few minutes late everytime until the code was used. Chicago does not use numbers like "a two eleven in progress". We say it lilke it is. "Ride with EMS, Man with a gun, Shots fired" makes it easier on us cuz were not that smart. Now I guess all the pro scanner people never considered what it would be like to be a worker at Autozone for 8 bucks an hour and be at the business end of handgun during a robbery. Id hate to have u scanner supporters working as a TSA agent! KABOOOOOOOOOOOM

Any time a topic comes up concerning police it sure does bring out the crazies. But then I've found that to be true in real life also.

Brutha, I can't help fix your problem. Best of luck to ya. Ya gunna need it. ;)

Thanks for the comments, I just wanted to see if you 2 like it when somebody acts like an a**hole towards you, like both you did to Buddy. Both of you could care less about others and you showed it. Hopefully he will still attend the Turbobuick nationals so some of us who respect him can show it. By the way I attended the University of Cincinnati one of the top criminal justice programs in the country.

Have a nice day

I get to use an AEROFLEX RF monitering reciever/transmitter.

I can listin to anybody I want, neighbors cell phones, military, police...

its alot of fun especially around the late evening.... some cell phone conversations are rather seedy!

He puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you and me. He also has opinions, whether they be ill informed or not, just like you and me. He offered his up, and seeings how I work in the industry I felt compelled to correct his ill-informed opinion. It has been done as respectfully as he deserved. Don't be such a nut-hugger. Act like a big boy now, and run along and play. You'll be okay. :)

Wow! You sure did show him huh.... I mean im sure we really learned a valuable lesson from you. Thank God we have people like you on this board to show people the way.

WOW! University of Cincinnati...... Now I can understand why it is ur so smart....:o

That's kinda like one step up from Community College isn't it? Dude, Cmon..... are you really gonna get up here and admit you went to the University of Cincinnati and got a CJ degree which is utterly useless in todays job market and actually think that was gonna impress anyone? LOl... everybody I know has a CJ degree. They are a dime a dozen. I was thinking you were gonna name some Ivy League school or something? Univ. of Cinn....lol

Lol...... u really are the true definition of a TOOL!

I used to be when I was younger, but got out of it, as other hobbies nudged it over. Was into CB's as well. I was indeed very exciting. Though it's also an insight, to how stupid people are, in your hometown. I got discouraged as to the level of stupidity in my city lol.

I am all for, the people that pay your salaries, being able to have access, to the freqs they paid for.... I think the people should be able to monitor the police... why not? You work for us, not the other way around.

And you're not HONESTLY going to try and make us think, that if you knew that a specific residence has a police scanner, that you're going to actually do something different, than you normally do, do you? You mean to tell me, that you utilize less situational awareness, and less tactics and strategy, if you are not sure the residence has a scanner? How do you know they DON'T have one? Do you actually drop the defensive mindset, and get lax as often as possible, when you think you can get away with it? Sounds dangerous to me.
There's no way, you can actually know, if one has a scanner. So therefore, you should always assume they do, and adjust the tactics accordingly. Do you not do this, when performing a roadside stop? Oh, ok then. So you only assume they're dangerous, only on half your operations, and not the other? I'm confused.
Police should aways assume the worst, when entering into any potentially tactical situation. I constantly see that they don't, every single night, on 'Cops', or 'The craziest police chases' or whatnot. And everytime, it's the cop getting messed up. (unfortuately)
I am in no way anti cop, or anti law. I am in fact VERY pro cop, and support them whenever, and however I can. I love cops in fact. They willingly put their lives on the line for us, each and every day. I just don't agree with some of their outlooks, every once and a while. I just wish they could get more funding, and more training. That would benefit them, and the citizens as well.
Scanners, in no way, make the bad guys more apt to wanna bring harm on police officers. If they want to ambush you, they're going to do it, scanner or not. Period. It's been happening wayyyyy before scanners were out, and it will continue to happen, after your freqs go totally secure too.
What's a scanner going to do, let the bad guys know the cops knocking on the door? Too late, the "Police, open up!!!!!" already did. All a bad guy has to do, to hurt a cop, is wait for the knock, then shoot thru the door with a shotgun slug. Or, just sit on an FN 5.7, wait for them to come in, and shoot. No scanner need.

Scanners are our right, and banning them is a huge rights violation. Now, going to your own secure freqs, is another story. Wanting to keep your business private, is also your right. (and not completely a bad idea) But until you go to a secure freq, people should have scanners. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know what your PUBLIC SERVANTS are doing. :)

(and before you get all crazy on my ass, talkin' about "you don't know what it's like!" let me tell you, that I patrolled baghdad for a year, responding to a lot of 'calls', doing bolo's and the whole deal. I know what it's like, coming up to a situation, where you don't know if they're armed or not. Or if this nice and calm situation, can potentially get out hand very quickly. In no way, did we ever drop our guard, just because we thought it may be a 'lesser' type of call. It was a hundred percent, or none at all. We maintained the tactical fundamentals each and every time. scanner or no scanner."

What I find really ironicly funny is how Sean and Brett both dont realize how the digitial radios work :D
