Has any of you guys ever made your on cables for your car? If so how big of a gauges of wire did you run for each?
 
Not for this Buick but I did make them for my old NA Buick as well as my Toyota PU. I used 1/0 wire in both cases which helped both of them crank easily. If you can use welding cable it works the best but is more $$$ in the end.
 
Years ago I made a set for multiple batteries in a school bus we converted to a rolling pimp station. I used thick ass wire from a car stereo shop I worked at. A friend that was a mobile Cat technician dropped by with some ends and a HUGE set of crimpers. Took about 5 minutes to make them all. I could have used those wires to lift buildings.


If you don't have access to that stuff, copper ends, a hammer, propane torch and some heat shrink will make some nice ones too.

Dee, if youu make you own cables make sure you dont use that cheap copper plated aluminum wire, stick with all copper.

Check with your local electrical retailer. See if they can get you 1/0 rubber coated. 1/0 usually comes with a plastic coat. They may have the solder less terminals. They also have battery crimp tools for sale. The local power company service trucks use battery power crimpers.
 
For those who made new batt cables, how did you make the positive one, since it contains the ECM power wire? You just run a separate wire?

What the jarhead said.;)

Get some rosin core solder and rosin flux. Dip the wire into the flux and then put the end on. Crush the end and heat it with a torch. Use the solder to fill the gaps up and the solder will make a permanent connection.
 
I made some for one of the cars some years ago. Used 2 and 4 gauge (iirc) with crimped on copper connectors. 140 amp alt. Never any issues. Ever.
