Ive been thinking about moving from where i live now (PA). To get out of the cold. snow, ice id rather take heat. i was thinking somewhere like charlotte, raleigh, or somewhere in NC. possibly somewhere in SC also. It would be in about 2 years though.

I know there are people on here that live in NC. can you give me info on pro's and con's of living in NC. what are the taxes like, cost of living, and what all is there to do. Also is there smog test and yearly safety inspections? whats the car scene like?

I am a dealer technician. I hear techs are needed more in the south than north and will pay better in the south? this true? I see relocation bonus and a sign on bonus.
anyone ever done this before either.
Any info is appreciated
TIA
Bryan

I've spent alot of time in Greensboro & really like the people & hospitality. If your a gear head there,s plenty of opportunity's working for a race team. I would move there in a minute if my wife would go for it. I might have a contact for you if interested in more info. about the area. Regards Lou

DO NOT COME TO ASHEVILLE!!!

I have lived here all my life and it used to be nice but people (tourist) started moving here and now we have the highest cost of livung in NC even though we are smaller than Charlotte or Raleigh. The local Gov. won't widen our 2 lane interstate because it will ruin the small town feel, but we still have big city traffic. Ashecille is full of retired people. hippies. and gays. The greatest thing about living here is the mountains,

As for weather; it gets cold here also, 3 nights ago it got down to 9 degrees. In the summer its not to bad here because the altitude but itgets very humid here and its much more humid in Charlotte or Raleigh.

I know you didn't mention Asheville, but I thought I let you know anyway, I could go on and on but you get the picture.

If you move to NC let us know and we can go to the track and race at least we still have a few drag strips left around NC and SC.

Here is why I like North Carolina :

1) no tail pipe test for pre 1996 vehicles, inspection minimal, horn, lights, bingo sticker.
2) Guns laws fully support the 2nd amendment.
3) Car insurance is cheap.
4) Bought 60 acres of land with 3 acre pond, 2400 sq ft farmhouse, Big barn for $65,000.00
5) Weather is great.
6) we have the mountains and the ocean.
7) Their are so many backroads for tunning your GN.
8) I like rednecks
9) I got my piece of junk, rusted out ,bumper falling, off blue smoke pushing 1973 Ford pickup right throught inspection.
10) You are allowed 7 deer during hunting season and yes you can use a high powered rifle to kill it.
11) Marboro's are $2.77 a pack.

I've been here in NC since 1990. I first lived in Charlotte, then moved about 25 min. north. I don't know where bogie1, found land that cheap, unless it's in east bumfu&%. but in the surounding charlotte are you can expect to pay 100k - 6 mill. for a home. it all depends on what type of living you like, city, country, lake ect. you pay personal property taxes on cars, boats, ect.
most of the tracks in the carolinas' are 1/8 mile, Darlington & Rockingham, are 1/4 but both SUCK for traction, a 98hp Honda can break the tires loose. I don't regret moving here @ all, but I am thinking further south in a few years or maby even Hawaii.
:D

I live in Raleigh and like it pretty well. Although the handling of winter weather here could be a little better, but thankfully it doesn't happen too often. In the summer there are cruise ins around town every weekend and some of the car clubs have little events here and there. We have several colleges in a 50mile radius, so if you are into college football or basketball you are well taken care of, plus college students are always good eye candy when cruising around on a weekend.:) If ya need more info on the Raleigh area feel free to PM me.

Ack!! That won't buy 2 acres of land W/O a house down here! Sounds like a little slice of Heaven to me!!:D

thanks for the input. I like what i hear, Whats the job market like?? Im a technician at a car dealer. I know its not the best job, but its what i do. Are there alot of busy shops down there?? I am thinking charlotte. Busier shops are more near bigger citys i guess? Cool that there are alot of tracks there. There are 2 near here both 1/4 and nice IMO. How far of a drive to the beach from charlotte?
thanks
Bryan

there are about 100 new car dealers in the char. area. what kind do you wan't to work on masarotii, lambo.,fererii, what?(lol).
charleston is 190 miles , myrtle is 4 hrs.

If you are a fully certified tech (with any of the major brands) you can get a job here the same day that you show up. Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill aka Research Triangle Park (RTP) and Cary dealers has openings all the time.
Good (and some bad) areas to live in, normally great weather and lots of cars events.
It is cheaper to live in some of the surrounding smaller cities but it is all depending on what kind of area that you like.

Well there you have it! Some like it some don't. I think it's good to be able to get different opinions. the fact about auto techs is they can go anywhere & find a job. Every state has it's good & bad points. But one things for sure the grass is always greener somewhere else. Buy the way a freind of mine is part owner in Farmington &
Piedmont tracks. Last october I when I was on vacation I had Farmington all to myself & tested a TT SBC regal I sold to a fellow by the name of Glenn Redmond. He also owns a 63 vette chassis car & runs in Big Dog class driven by a Ronnie Gardner & has won quite a bit till a blown SBC Mustang driven by Todd Tudarou started cleaning up. Those southern boys sure love thier racing. Pro Mod also draws a big crowd. I guess this why the south appeals so much to me. Yes I seem to get along well with rednecks also.

So far, so good. Tons of advantages! True, it does have 4 actual seasons here, but the winter is NOTHING like what we had up north! A really (rare) cold day might dip down near the high 20's. The daily norms this time of year are in the low 50's.
No state income tax!
No smog inspections of any kind (where I am).
Low realestate costs.
Very low realestate taxes and insurance.
Very friendly people that actually smile at you and, heavan forbid, actually talk to you!
Beautiful mountain scenery.
etc.
etc.

Moving to NC?

If so....... I have a real nice upscale house on 2ac, 1820sq ft, all remodled, with a lake! and fish in it!!!
oversize garage, room for more garage, 3br, 2ba, big fam room,

$175 will get it!,
I live 2000 mi away, so....?

Thanks and good luck

As a general rule, an ASE certified technician especially one with OEM credentials can just about write his or her own ticket and yes relocation and signing incentives are sometimes part of the package. Try these websites to get a feel for who's hiring and where: www.needtechs.com or www.actautostaffing.com
Between Hendrick,Leith, Crown, Keffer and a few other dealer groups you can find pretty much every make in every part of the state.

good info soo far! I know about Needtechs.com i have checked that out before. However ill have to check out actautostaffing.com Ive never hear of that site before.
Thanks!

What line do you have experience with? I'm a Parts Manager at a GM dealership in Charlotte. I can keep an eye out for you if you'd like.

I moved here from Bethlehem, PA by way of Ohio back in 1995. There's only a few small things I would change about the move.
