I was getting my ta49 ready to Install on my new engine, when after I put on my old stock exh elbow,I looked inside the hole (where you would hook up the down pipe) and noticed that the elbow didnt line up with the turbine hole.Guess you could grind it to match (the elbow, that is ),but it sure would be real thin in some places. Is there a special exh elbow that I need,to fit this precision exh housing ?? The turbo came off a 87 G.N. ,and I`m putting it on a 84 TT w/ a 4.1L.I`m using a set of BGC headers with a 3" dn pipe . I bought these off a guy who used these on a 84 TT also. So what options do I have on a proper fitting Exh. housing ??

That's normal. I had to grind mine to fit. I didn't notice the turbine wheel was partially covered until later when I had to pull the elbow off and noticed the markings. It makes a big difference in spool and must be done. Don't worry about it being too thin. I ground mine to fit the 64 and it was very thin but I never had any sealing or cracking problems.

I believe there's an elbow made for use with 3" downpipes that should already have the metal removed.

ta49 presision housing

Thanks, cool 84,for the Info.I think for now I`ll grind It ,just to get it running. WOW,this project has been an an "adventure".---Jack

Lucky I saw this thread.............I checked mine out and sure enough my stock elbow wasnt going to cut it............so I am getting rid of some material too.............thanks guys.........

ta49 exh housing

I`m new to the turbo scene, but I was wondering,is a presision exh housing a stock item on a ta49,or is it a upgraded item ?? 1qwick85,what housing do you have ? Also I noticed the wastegate vaccume pod has only one hookup tp it,where as my old 84tt had two vaccum hookups, what gives ??

Mine is a John Craig turbo...........it has a .63 housing....that is all I can see...............the exhaust elbow still blocks the propeller on the outer sides of it...........expessionally were there is this lip inside the elbow...............I took it to a shop and they are going to fix it for me as I dont have the proper tools to do so..........I cant wait until I have some proper tools to do something like that, but then I probably wont need they as much.......lol............

As for the wastegate hookup.............there is a vacumm line diagram in the stickys on the hot air forum...........Buick From Hell posted lots of info.......there is a diagram for one or two vacumm line hook ups to the wastegate..............HTH......but coundnt you use the old one.......or is that not a adjustable one?? I am new to this stuff too......bear with me........:D

I'm going to get flamed for this but who cares. Save yourself some trouble and order the standard .63 Garett housing for the 49. I can not say enough bad things about the Precision housing. At this very moment, almost midnight my dad is in the process of putting a Garett housing back on his TE62. The PTE housing is worse than just laggy, it's lazy. I consider a laggy turbo one that spools slow at first but once it hits a few psi comes on boost fairly quickly. The PTE housing takes forever to get to full boost. Even when you're at 10psi and it's set at 15, it takes forever to go the extra 5 psi. I'm swapping mine back to a Garett before mine is up and running again. I've never dealt with a PTE housing on a 49 before, maybe it's livable but the couple HP you might gain from it is not a worthwhile tradeoff to me. This is coming not only from my own experience but from a total of 5 local people. We've all had great experience with Limit Engineering and Turbonetics isn't too bad either.

To answer your question, at least when I ordered my turbo a long time ago the PTE housing was an option, ~$100 I think. Also, it's been a while but I'm pretty sure you use the vacuum line that comes from the wastegate solenoid and delete the other one for the 87 wastegate.

I have the .63 housing and my exhaust elbow(were the downpipe connects) is still covering part of the fins on the turbo housing...........is it normal to have to port the exhaust elbow out to get the clearance needed for the fins to be clear of obstruction......I am confused.............cool 84........why are you saying to go with the garrett .63..............because of the turbo lag with the other housings???or because there would be no clearance probs.?? I am assuming I have a garrett .63 housing
 It say .63, it is a John Craig turbo to0, I was told. thanks either way I have to port mine.......but if I do have the better housing for less turbo lag that is awesome......I hate turbo lag....:D Nick

I say go with the standard Garett because of lag. You will have to remove the same amount of metal no matter which housing you use. I threw away my old ported elbow about the same time I ran over my old downpipe, I had no idea people might want it.

The car will run fine without porting but it won't be at it's best and it makes a noticable difference on lag.

So mine is a standard garett...........how much bigger is the precision housing? I dont want much turbo lag........considering I am going to run this with my stock convertor for now.......so I really dont want any added lag.........but we will see how she acts with the stock convertor.......some guys told me it would be just fine and some told me to get a convertor.........all in do it....$$$$$$$$........:D But, thanks for clearing up my housing question.......now I know what I got........what do you guys think about the stock convertor with my TA49 together? the only thing you can do to prevent lag is to have a bigger stall right? I am looking at next summer for a stall and build up on my perfect 96k stock tranny! Thanks cool84....................Nick

stock convertor should be just fine for a ta-49(i ran mine for a while with my ta-60)as long as the fueling in your chip is where it needs to be.if you're too rich it'll be a slug no matter what.

I am getting a custom burnt chip from turbotweak.......and he said he was going to up the fuel a little....because of my V2 intake flowing so much air..........so we will see.........I just went out and started looking at everything I got to put on yet and I am still missing a few little parts......like gaskets and such.....oh well have to order them on monday......later guys
