I was checking pressures recently and I have a very noticable buzz coming from the pump, I assume it is the PR system. Much louder as I pull the TV cable out and it occurs in all gears. The needle on my gauge also vibrates alot during the testing. It is a stock 7 vane pump with hardened rings, .471 boost valve and heavy spring installed.

The pump is now out of the car and internally it looks fine. What causes this, will it damage the trans and can I change something to make it go away?

Thanks

7 Vane pumps When

The pressure is increased from stock have a tendency to buzz. There are a couple of ways to lessen the noise with the 7 vane pump , but most just install the 10 vane set up and that seems to make the noise clear up.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

Will it damage anything the way it is? Also, I have read about problems with installing a 10 vane pump in terms of clearances. Can I buy one of the kits and do it myself? Anything advice if I go this route?

Is the 13 vane pump any better?

Thanks

The noise isn't hurting anything

The Pressure Regulator buzzing won't reallly hurt anything, it just makes it a litttle more difficult to calibrate the rest of the hydraulic circuits {spacer plate/valve body}. When the pressure regulator is buzzing the fluid inside the trans is pulsating as well {just like feeling your hart pulsing at your wrist}.

If your going to go with the 10 or 13 vane pump your best bet is the factory\delco rotor and slide. Clearances are crucial.

Where in MI are you located? I may be able to help you with the clearances if you decide on stepping into the 10 vane pump.

7,10 or 13 vanes; it's all a matter of preference.:D

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I live in Oxford and work in the Troy area, not too far away you.

Since I am using an 87 Monte SS trans behind a low horse power 327 in a 68 camaro, I am thinking about taking the .471 boost valve out and going back to stock for now. I also heard that grinding a land off one of the valves in the PR line up will help, is this true?

The car is just week end cruiser, but the overdrive is nice for the longer drives. What would you do to the pump and what would it cost to go to the 10 or 13 vane pump.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg you can call me anytime at

586-255-3426 on the pricing. It won't be bad, i promise.

The land to gind off the main regulator is the 2nd land down from the top of the valve {the spring seat is the bottom of the valve}.
It will help some, but won't get rid of all the noise.

Make sure the pump slide has 2 springs also.

If you were to bring the pump over. I would increase the seal drain openings,replace the pump bushing with the teflon coated bushing and loctite it in place, replace the rotor and pump slide{with the 10 vane units} and set the pump clearances,replace the pump vane rings with unbreakable rings and replace the stator {if the one in it isn't hardened}
