Alrightee, I'd day a good start. :)

I did a pressure test and it seems that the numbers are good.

A 200-4R with a PTS shift kit and a 2200 HD converter + new flexplate.

psi at no TV and full TV @ 1000 rpm

P & N: 56 - 170
R: 105 - 240
D & 3: 56 - 140
1 & 2: 123 - 140

I have only done a very short test drive. Around a small block. I never got over of second.

BUT - when warm, I get a ticking sound in N & P. The pressure gauge needle vibrates in N and P too !!!!

I still have to nip under the car to check if the flexplate is rubbing against the starter. I think that would be unlikely, since the pressure gauge needle vibrates in N & P it seems with the ticking.

What is making that ticking sound ?

Can I drive 10 miles and back for my annual tech inspection

MTIA,

D.

Dorian that press. is low you should have around 200 psi. @ full TV . Try it @ a higher RPM 1500 & see what you get.

Jim

Okie - I'll check the pressure at 1500 this weekend

According to the ATSG I have, the numbers seem to be all right - but it is not taking into account the PTS shift kit. The trans if from a 1989 Caprice

I think my pressure was checked with a warmed up trans - not hot/operating temp - does this make a difference ?

I also have a TV boost and pressure regulator from PTS - not installed.

I'll post the new 1500 RPM numbers when I get them.

Any clue what that vibration might be ?

MTIA :)

a small update

I took the car for a 15 mile drive. It shifted through all the gears nicely. 1 - 2 occurs around 2000 rpm.

At mild throttle the shifts are firm: 1 - 2, 2 - 3 and even 3 - OD. Give it some more gas and power and all the shifts go flat instead of firming up.

I don't think this is a matter of too little fluid, I'm right on the max mark.

Should I put in my PTS TV boost kit and the PTS pressure regulator ?

BTW - the ticking sound is gone !!!

Tomorrow I'll check the full TV pressure when hot.

This is not a matter of TV cable adjustment, right ?

Hmmm - I think I'm going to add

half a quart to a quart of Dexron III.

See if that helps - maybe I am low.

put the PTS kit in

Put the kit in & check press. again I bet you`ll have more & the shifts won`t go soft. Hopefully you`ll be barking the tires when it shifts.

Jim

Hmmmm - I think that's the way to go

I'm going add en extra half quart to a quart and do a hot pressure test - I'm using a Lokar dipstick. Maybe the reading is off - sometimes if I get the throttle angle just right, it will chirp the tires on the 1 - 2.

Then I'll give PTS/Bruce a call for their opinion and instruction before I install the TV boost and regulator kit.

'Let you know how it goes...

update

I added a quart over. Did another pressure test at 1500. The numbers are about the same. The ticking came back. Just got off the phone with Mark from PTS. I'll replace the pressure regulator, line and TV boost valves within the next couple of days. I'm so relieved that Mark iformed me that I did not need to drop the tranny again to install the kit.

Fingers crossed that this will work

Let us know Ira. Also, you mentioned in your post you have pulsation in your pressure readings in park and neutral, along with the noise. It may very well be a pump noise and I would not run it other than to verify that point. Let us know, Mark

Thanks Mark

I read somewhere that it could be pressure regulator buzzing. At one time, it seems, there was a design fault. I'm hoping that's what this is - and that it will be moot when replaced with the PTS PR.

The noise seems to be related to TV cable tension.

Well we'll see what happens. There's a shop here that can rebuild trans pumps - I think I can trust them to do that, if little else. I'll keep the PTS parts away from them though.

I did a couple of practice installations on an old pump that I have. It's not really that easy. Tomorrow I will try and install. And in the next day or so, I will run a pressure test with the oil level spot on.

Stay tuned.

Got the PTS pressure kit in

Man - it looked like an easy job, but it sure wasn't. phew.

Test on Saturday.

D.

Was about a quart short of max fluid level

so I didn't get to do the full test.

However I did do 1/2 the test (min TV) and my pressures have gone up accross the board. So I guess I did install the PTS PR kit correctly :D

Old and new min TV pressure - trans kinda cool, and a quart low, I think (the gauge was hooked up, so it was all I could do to look over :D ) Not a true test really

old - new

P: 56 - 110
R: 105 - 130
N: 56 - 110
D: 56 - 120
3: 56 - 130
2: 123 - 135
1: 123 - 135

Stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of the story.

ticking???

Ticking go away or still there? I don`t think it would have hurt to do the test a qt. low, some of us are like that all the time & we're still carrying on. :D

Jim

Ticking is gone, but...

other issue - I thing I screwed up the PR install. :( See my new post.
