I had no idea what was making the rattling sound under my hood. I worried it was everything from the torque convertor to something in the engine. My most recent post asked about replacing the flexplate without removing the engine or tranny. It turns out I have to do neither. After removing the serpentine belt the noise was still there. I put it back on and had the MAF pipe off to watch the turbo. The turbo spun freely. As I started banging on various parts of the engine to try and hear a sound, with the car off of course, I heard it right around the turbo. Fearing the worse I removed the downpipe to try and see if the wheel was damaged. It turns out the wastegate arm in the downpipe was stuck and wouldn't move at all. It took several hard taps with the hammer and some WD-40 to finally free it. Being stuck the wastegate puck would hit against the exhaust housing and make the rattling sound. After freeing the movement some the noise is now gone. I do have one more question though. Is there a bushing or something to replace to restore the free movement of a new downpipe. I have the terry-style ATR downpipe. The arm now moves, but movement is limited. I could have made it looser but was trying to hurry the job to see if that was my problem. Thanks again to those who have offered suggestions and tips on the problems with my car. After cleaning it up and fixing the rattling noise I might not try to sell it after all...unless....

Do you have an adjustable wastegate rod? If so, ATR recommends not using that type of wastegate adjustment, as it will cause the wastegate arm to bind. They recommend controling boost with their valve or I suppose you could use any vendors boost valve.

I actually have both. The stock arm was made adjustable and I have one of Sinful6's ( I think) boost control valves. I adjusted the arm to where you have to pull it to get it on the rod. Before, when it got stuck, it was loose enough where you could put it on the arm with just your hand. Now that the noise is gone and the car looks a ton better it's time to get a big servo put in the tranny and finally start tuning this baby. Any luck on the car yet Shane?

Naw still not running. I think wiring harness bad that is about the last damn thing to try. This thing has more cuts in it than a parkers BBQ pig. We are going to BG Friday and Sat.
Going to try to learn something there. Think just going to pull harness and start OVER! Hey bud I know a guy in ahoskie who could do your tranny and it be right. He is doing my rear end this week for my street car. It is going to the paint shop some time next week and guess what color "WHITE"
I will get a price if you want and can carry it up there on my old rollback.
Also give me a call next week I am going to get "THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL" (I really like the way you put that) out of storage next week come by and check it out. I finally got my new building ready so she is COMING HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lethal, what exactly did this noise of yours sound like? My car(just bought) has a noise that sounds almost like a rod letting go at about1700-1950 RPM's. Engine was "supposedly" just gone through.Does not do it when cold or when I load it against the converter in drive or reverse. Local expert says don't worry about it just drive it and we'll fix it when he gets back from BG. Noise is coming from the front of engine by the way. TIA.

It sounds like a loose heat shield or something. It is a rattling noise kind of like a marble in a washing machine. I thought it was something in the engine or convertor too. Then after doing a search on here I believed it to be a cracked flexplate. Then I went to the bank so my g/f could cash her check and a girl coming out needed a jumpstart. When I opened the hood the rattling sound was real loud. I got home and started searching for it and found it to be the wastegate puck. I checked movement on it yesterday and it was stuck again. With a screwdriver and a hammer I tapped the arm away from the turbo enough where it freed it up a little more. No rattles to report and the car drives good.

Marble (or several) , sounds like that too I suppose. Won't do it at idle though, just seems to like the 1700-2100 RPM range, once it warms up. Oil pressure is OK according to another post I put up here, so I don't think its anything too serious according to everyone, time will tell I guess.
