I'm at my parent's house for the week, so I use their dialup service to connect my laptop to the internet. When I connect my laptop, I always have a connection speed of at least 49kps. When their desktop connects its usually around 40kps, sometimes slower.

Both computers are Dell's and should be set up nearly exactly the same (I ordered them both). What could be causing this discrepancy? Thanks for any help.

Slower dialup rates can be caused by MANY things. First thing you may want to try though, is going to Dell's website and see if there are any modem driver updates, as well as checking Windows Updates for the same. Modem drivers can play a big part in connection speed.

Different dialup services have different connection rates, it also depends on the local service in her area. The phone company/provider may need to upgrade lines in her area, fat chance of that happening. Check the modem drivers first.

It can very likely be the phone service. I had an already installed 2nd line activated at the house, but the speed was poor. After the ISP and phone company provided little help, I researched it myself.

The line I used for voice would always connect at 50k plus, while the line I used for data would never exceed 33k. I went out to the box on the house, removed all other lines except the 2 that went to my desk. I did a test, and then swapped the lines at the box. BAM! Instant 50k on the voice line. I called the phone company and reported my test and results. They came the next day and replaced some board at the telephone pole and all was good.

I basically had to isolate the issue to be from the box out to the pole in order to get them to do anything.

I found a driver update and downloaded it, but no change.

I when I connect my laptop, I am connecting through the same line that my parents use when connecting their desktop --- so it shouldn't be an issue with the line.

Thanks for the ideas.
