I think someone posted they had an issue with the new PT-70 gtq turbo. something like it needed a orrifice or something in the stock oil feed line. Is this true? I have just ordered the PT- 70 gtq and I have the stock oil feed line with a braided return line and was just wondering if there is something I need to get so i don't ruin my brand new turbo. Scot w.

Well with 45 views and only one person having an issue with one kinda sums it up! It deffinately don't look like a common issue or more people would have posted about it. Thanks! Scot w.

I just found out that even if it does start to smoke it won't hurt the turbo nor does it mean the seals or the turbo need to be re-built. the PT-70 gtq turbo does'nt have the normal type seals in it. It has kinda like a piston/ring style seal. So if one does start to smoke a restrictor will solve the problem and be just fine. Scot w.

When you start it up. Keep the air filter off the car (if your DFI) and look at the compressor fins. If oil is coming through this and making a mess of your housing. You need some sort of a restrictor or smaller feed line. Its pure hit and miss. Some 70 GTQ's are just bolt up and drive, and some need restrictors.

Great info guys!

I just got my PT70GTQ here yesterday and had a question.

I didnt order a wastegate with mine cause i thought the standard H.D. wastegate would work. I went to bolt it on, and the holes are in different spots on the compressor housing.
Can anyone chime in and let me know if this is the style where the wastegate arm is bent to give it a different angle?

I also went to remove the .85 housing and cannot get it to pop off, all the bolts are off and the backing plate/ring behind the exhaust wheel is fit real tight i guess??

My plans were to get the housing jet hot coated, if i cant do that, its going to get brushed with high temp paint... Anyone else gonna paint there housing so it doesnt rust?

If the turbo originated from PTE, then they can sell you a HD actuator with the correct bracket welded to it. When you call them you have to specify that you want a Heavy Duty actuator with the H-cover bracket welded to it for a Buick 3-bolt application. The H-cover (4" inlet, 3" discharge with the PTE logo on the side of the discharge) is the PTE compressor cover that comes standard on the PT70GTQ turbo. As far as the restrictor deal goes, we never recommended a restrictor on the journal bearing turbos, this was a no no. I've seen were people would run a braided oil return line that would get a kink in it and depending on how serious the kink was, it could cause the oil to back up and leak past the seals. The only time we would recommend a restrictor fitting was when you run a Garrett Dual Ball Bearing CHRA. The Garrett BB cartridges require less oil for lubrication therefore a restrictor fitting was required or else you would flood the cartridge and it would leak. If you call PTE, Ask for Pete. Pete has been into Buicks as long as I have (since the cars were new) and should be able to hook you up. Last time I checked, the HD actuator sold for $81.99. They do not offer an actuator with a bent adjustment rod for the Buick. All the Buick actuators have straight adjustment rods. When it comes to removing the turbine housing, with the housing sitting flush on a bench, or as flush as you can get it due to the GT-Qs torque nut sticking out past the flat edge of the housing, have someone tap on the turbine housing with a rubber mallet while you hold/support the rest of the turbo and it should pop off the turbo. Use caution when you do this as you want the housing to come straight off the chra without dinging the turbine wheel. The wheel is pretty sturdy but it could bend the tip of a blade or possibly break a tip so use caution. I personally don't recommend coating the turbine housing on the inside, if you have it coated, only have them coat the outside of the housing. wheel clearances can be compromised if you coat the inside of the housing.

Patrick-
Thanks for chiming in with all that info, i will have to print this out :)

Yes, i recieved mine from PTE this week and when i ordered it, i really didnt even think about the actuator.Since this turbo is alot larger than a TE45a, i didnt know how far i had to clock down the compressor housing, and if the actuator would work, even at all.
Im running a Tony Dequick front mount and just didnt know if it all would line up while using a stock location wastegate.
Most likely i will just get the motor in the car and see how the pipes line up to see if i need to go with a external wastegate.

10-4 on the jet hot coating and tolerances:)

Well it looks like I started a thread with a wealth of information! This is some great info! I myself am going from a TE-45a to the PT-70 gtq w/ 3-bolt .85... and also forgot to mention or ask about the actuator. Thanks for adding all this info for us 70 gtq newbies  If there is any more please keep posting! Thanks, Scot w.

Scot-
What trans and convertor are you going with?
I have a lonnie diers 2004r with a neil chance 3800 non lockup with the bat brake, i really hope its enough convertor to spool the 70 GTQ.

Our combo sounds close... Im really on the fence as to which injectors 83s?

Im putting this car together, i purchased it with no motor or trans and since i have no scan tool for it, no datalogging equipment,no maf, no translator, no upgraded computer...
Im thinking of going with BS3 since its all of that and wide band ready?

What setup are you using?

Here are your answers: First, I think your trans & converter will be just fine!!

1) Brian Hofer trans- 2004r / converter is a (real art-carr) 16930 with a "N" stall 3800 with a billet front cover.

2) I'm using the F.A.S.T bank 2 bank w/ wideband o2 (only cause more people know how and have been tunning with it longer). That would be my recomendation for you. Give Cal at Hartline Performance a call maybe he has a used fast system for you. He's a GREAT guy to deal with and will help you in anyway he can.

Hell our cars even look alike!

Hmmm, im still on the fence as what to do. Most likely this wont be done for awhile.
This combo isnt going on my white limited, its going on my grey T in the link in my sig.

What are your goals to run with your setup?

The goal is to have a 10sec. street brawler that is capable of driving 4hrs to BG, Making some good 10sec.passes and driving it back, and also do some auto-cross with it too. "Function" a Street/Strip car should live up to both halves of it's name, Run a Solid ET and have Exellent Street Manners. with these cars that is not too hard to accomplish. Tire choice is really going to be the hard part!!

any of you guys every get your gtq's on? i have a 72gtq and have had oil smoke coming out now. turbo has less then 700 miles.

I have'nt even recived mine yet! and then it will be at least another month or so before the engine is in and ready and hopefully by then there will be some more info on this issue and how to resolve it....

Man, look at what santa brought me:eek: LOL

Mine isnt even on the motor yet, its gonna be awhile.

LOOKS GOOD!!! ;) Why such a big differance in wastegate hole size? the turbo is much bigger but it looks like the exhaust hosing is bigger on the 44. ??

44 is setup for external gate, that is why the hole is maxed out.

The 70 is a virgin, so the hole is not opened to specific car/downpipe yet.

That 44 almost looks like a stocker next to the 70!

What brand of 1200 degree paint works the best? I would like to paint my exhaust housing as well. Thanks
