Hey,
Is it just me or does this turbo make more power then my old TE60? All I did was switch to the 54 and put a 23 row SLIC on, and the car at the same boost (18psi) pulls much harder...anyone?

Yes, you're not loosing it.
:D
The PT54 turbo, was rated to support 620 flywheel hp, vs the TE-60 which was rated to support 580 fwhp, both when maxed out. So, on paper you're talking 40 fwhp. In reality, maybe 20-25 at that boost level. Torque is probably the biggest thing you're feeling as you've stepped up 2 turbine wheel sizes from where you were, and your charge temps are now a lot cooler than before with the IC upgrade. The PT54 was a very potent turbo back in it's hey day.

I think the 6031 is overrated and doesnt usually produce the results most would think. Its only got a 2mm larger compressor than a TE44 (5831) and doesnt really do much for the backpressure issues since it uses the same ex wheel. The 54 uses a much better designed ex wheel and will drop backpressure a lot as Patrick explained with the various wheels available. If the 60 was using a 76 trim id expect about the same power potential as a PT54. I remember running a decent set of heads with the stock turbo and switching to a PT54 and a PTE fmic and picking up well over 125hp at boost levels around 23-24psi. The car went 113-114mph before and over 124mph in the quarter after.

I know its not quite the same (I honestly do not know how different it is) but for now we are running a turbonetics 60-1 stage 5 turbo that from my research appears to basically be a PT54 (Patrick correct me if I'm way off here) But yes i like this turbo a lot, and have no doubts it can do over 120+ with the proper setup. It went 117+ on 21 psi on our silver car at Noble last year. Unfortunately fixing an exhaust leak and not turning the boost down far enough on the next pass resulted in a blown HG. I was really curious to see what it would do at 25 psi.

Awesome....Yea I got a handfull of times in the 11.90's with my TE-60 and Dutt neck stocker... so this turbo/IC should make mid-low eleven sec power no prob....

You really need to have a larger cam to go with that 16930 converter. Ive noticed that its easy to drive over the 16930 converter over 500hp. The flash stall will be higher than the cams usable range. Fwiw i ran a restalled D5 and locked it to get 124mph out of the 54. The converter was not loose enough down low to spool the 54 for optimum e.t.'s and had a 212 flat cam with 1.65 rockers for a gross lift of about .460

Been 10.60's in TSS trim with the Ta61/PT54 @ B.G. pushing the snot out of it... I think it still is a very potent turbo in this day...

anyone know how fast it has gone? at what point should the bigger .85 housing be used?

The PT54 has gone 10.30@ 131+. If you had a really good converter id rec the .85 for anything that will be trapping over 120mph.

Yea next season I wanna go with a roller, I figured the stock cam was good for mid-low 11's. Have heard a bunch of guys running those times with unopened cars...
