Hey guys, just installed a new 10" converter in place of a restalled d5. The car was trapping high 109's and yesterday with the 10" it slowed down 4 mph. Shifting at 5500 out of first and 5200 out of second. Rpm drop was 500 between shifts.
Engine is a stock long block with stock valve springs and my question is with the engine staying between 4700-5200 most of the run could this be a valve spring issue or do I need the converter tighter? Thanks for any input.

Sounds like springs, I picked up 6 mph on the back end after I changed mine and that was the only change I made at the time. I went from picking up 20 mph in the last half to over 26+

Stock engine with stock intercooler is dead after 4500. The fastest of the fast unopened engines I've seen all spent as much time as possible between 4100 and 4500. If you did valve springs and had more than the typical 57mm turbine and wanted to run 30+psi you can get it to pull to 5300 in 3rd. It's a turd past 4800 though. If the OP had a 16 or 17 blade 9.5" it would be 4200-4300 flash and less than 5% slip at the trap. The converter design matters a lot

Try shifting at 4500 until you can get a different converter...

He probably can't because it's flashing higher

Bison is right it will not shift before 5500 1-2 and 5200 2-3. I do have a good sized front mount and these passes were at 29psi with zero knock on meth inj and 11.0 afr. Car has gotten slower and slower every year. Could be me changing the combo and not knowing what I'm doing.

Springs and converter would probably net you 7-8mph and a few tenths.

Bison I plan on putting a good set of heads on the car next season. Should I still send out the converter? Thanks.

Even manually shifting? I tried a ptc 10". It launched good but that was it. Just felt soggy around town. Went to a Pats 12" lock up which I ran down to 11.3. Probably would have gone more too.

Btw, I think the 10" had 16% slip by the end of the run.

You'd have to tighten the converter a lot. It will spool quite a bit slower. You need 600-800 rpm less

You have the wrong converter. No matter what you do to it,it will never be what you need. The more power you throw at it,the more it will slip. If you want a converter you can grow into, talk to Dave at Turbo Buick Performance (516) 285-1103

I had a Ptc 10" 3200 it slipped so bad up top I thought I was knocking it into neutral.. off the hop it pulled pretty good but once power built up it was done.

a very obvious mistake.you have all the info you need as others have stated.good info in this thread.

So the 10" is a waste of money. Didn't see any of this in my research before I bought it. Thanks for all the info and help guys, guess I'm looking for a new converter now.

Oh, there's been several threads all about the limits of the ptc 10...
